Friday the 13th

This past Friday was the 13th. Some students are asking about the western superstition of this as a very unlucky day. It is not exactly clear where this comes from, but there are some ideas. 13 is an unlucky number. #12 is lucky... it means "completion" or "perfection." 12 months completes a year. 4 season, each 3 months, completes the cycle. 12 zodiac symbols and so on... so 13 is the next number, breaking the perfection of 12. If you visit a hotel or high office building in the west (or even a tall hotel in Bangkok for western tourist/clients), you will see that there is no #13 button on the elevator. There is no 13th floor (10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16...). Quite funny.

There is also the belief that bad things happen on Friday. It is the day that Jesus was crucified (killed). There are many events that seem to happen on Friday that makes people feel fear.

So, Friday the 13th is a day when people must be especially careful. I think there are many beliefs about numbers in Asian traditions also.

For my question this week:

Ascription: It is "a script" that our culture writes for us. We may feel comfortable with the script, and continue to perform it, or there may be parts of the script that we would like to adjust. I wonder about how ascription is a problem for your avowal. Or opposite: Is you avowal a problem for your ascription? Aj. M

  1. Hi Aj.Matthew

I knw about Friday 13th from someone so long ago.
I think that in Thailand also has this believe, but it is on Wednesday.
My grandmother always tells me that people can't do sth.about yourself such as washing hair or cutting nails.
Moreover, my grandmother not allowed me to wear new clothes or shoes on Saturday too.

I'm not sure that other people has believe same as me or not.

Because my grandmother, she is 95 years old, and she has many believes that we (New generation ) do not know at all.

    For the Questions.
I grew up from the old believe family, so
I'm faraway home for almost 3 years because I live in central part of Thailand.

When I go back home every time, my family is all surprised about me.

    Because I was changed.Especially, I'm make up!!

When I was in high school, I never care about myself at all.

After, I go back home, they are all surprised and seem do not like the way I do.

Anyway, my mom is an teacher, and my dad is a cop.
So they are both strict to me a lotttt!!!!

My friends always ask me that why are u ok with that strict mom and dad.

My answer that I'm ok because they'r all my parents.

    I love them so much.

  3. Good evening Aj. M

I've heard about this western belief that 13 is unlucky number. I think that 6 is an unlucky number for Thai people, but 9 is the lucky number. I don't know why they always believe this way. By the way, some people may believe that Friday is bad day but I don't think so. It's very nice day for me because it's the beginning of my weekend. I can hang out with my friends, or do everything I want on Friday night. Then, I can rest on the whole Saturday!!!

    For your question this week...
I think ascription in Thai society is a problem for me in some ways. For example; Thai women shouldn't wear shorts because it's improper. It's the old tradition in Thai society, but I think it's my choice to wear what I want. Time has changed so everything has changed too.

  4. Hi Aj.M

When I was young, I always heard about the friday 13 th. My older sister told me about this day. It's the day of ghost! They will come out of the coffins! It made me so scared. I can't go to bathroom at night or even sleep late, but now I grow up . Sometimes, I ask myself "Why I have to fear on Friday 13th...I'm not western!!"

Thais believe in number also. #9 is the great number. It pronuces in Thai "Kaw" means going on. I think #0 is not good for Thais. It means nothing.

Culture is ascirption for me. I were taugh that this thing should do and those thing shouldn't do. Sometimes it make me uncomfortable to do something like climbing the trees. Girls shouldn't climb the trees -*-. We should stay at home and do the houseworks. I think Thai culture is quite limit activities for Thai girls. It's not fair. I want to be and play things I ever wanted.

One day, I wanted to play the kite. My dad didn't allow me. He said "it's a boy sport." Where is the justic??

  5. Good evening Aj.Matthew !!

I was considering about Friday 13th as well.
I hope it would be a lucky day because my boyfriend and I just started to open our own business for the first time on that day. ^^

From your question, I believe that my avowal and ascription and get along well together.

I feel comfortable for being what I am now and I don't need to pretend to follow the rules of my culture at all.

For example, I wear school uniform quite neatly and I like this very much. I feel good when I wear a skirt that not too short and I like black shoes with my uniform really. I also have another shoes with colors as well and I just sometimes would like to put on with a school uniform but I don't. I don't know why. I just proud to wear what I am wearing and that's enough. =D

Have a good night and see you in class!

  6. Good Evening Aj. Matthew

When I was young, I am still confusing about western belief that 13 is unlucky number. I don’t know why and how they are belief in 13 is unlucky number.

Fortunately, I studied with Aj.Stuart two years ago. He related a story about 13 is unlucky number in western for students in listening class. I can remember that Friday the 13th occurs when the 13 of a month falls on Friday. It is a bad for your health, everyone will be scare this day. It is just only in the western belief in superstition.

In the same way, in Asian traditions there are many superstitions in societies. For example; I have known that Eastern Thai believe about scarecrow was hanged in front of the house for expelling the devil and protecting people in the family.

Moreover, I have herd from my father about 6 is unlucky number and 9 is lucky number in Thai believe.

    For the question….,
In my opinion, Thai society is quite strict about behavior that human should be do and do not. It is not convenient and considerate to other people. I have to follow the rule that they are limit activities for me. When I have to go to party with my mother, I need to wear skirt for respect the host. Although I don’t want to wear skirt but I need to wear it follow my parent. In facts, I want to wear trousers. Lol lol

  7. well, I do actually dont think so that it is a bad day on13th friday. I think it is just the fairly tales that people transmitted as a story. Like in Thailand that make a story to make people belive. However, it is a good knowleagde about 13th friday.
Hmm Ajan Matthew, I really confused my self that why when I do reading the book, i dont understand but when i studied in class, i understand obviously.IoI

  8. ้hello Aj.Matthew :)

For the belief of Friday 13, I have heard about this story for long time ago but i'm not clear about it.

When I was in high school, one of my friends told me that in Thai we believe in number "13" as well.
He said that number 13 is like the word "ghost" when we rotate it clockwise (phee) in Thai. By the way, i think this kind of belief is found very often in Northern Thailand because old people here all believe in ghost.

For the question, i think my avowal and ascription go along together quite well.
Even my parents they are both an government officer but we can share what we want or what we like.

For example, My dad he is very strict about the time of using computer or everything that he thinks that it is not proper for girls to do. This is because he thinks in old way of belief.
I always pay respect to him but if sometimes he complains to me about my changed behavior, i can talk to him then we understand :)

so I know what my parent's rule want me to do ,on the other hand, I can do what i want but I respect to them as well.

see you in class :)with your nice quiz (hope)

  9. I do agree with you that many countries have
    the belief about number.

Chinese people believe about number and also colour. They believe that 8 is a lucky number and they also believe that red and gold are lucky colours. However, I don't think that these all can really bring a good luck.

For the question, I think my avowal and ascription get along quite well in most situation, but sometime I also want to be myself and don't need to follow everything that our culture has set for us.

  12. I don't think 13 is unlucky number.
It was just a normal number.
I born at 13, is that mean I am unlucky person?
    I don't think I am unlucky person.
Conversely, I am very lucky person.
I usually get almost everything I have wished.
Anyways, I like my birthday which is the day before Velentine's Day.

    For the question;
Someimes, the ascription disturbs my avowal.
I like to wear a shorts because they are comfortable and easy to match with the shirts.
When I go to the temple with my mother, she usually complain me about my dress.
She told me that I wore unappropriately.
    Boring :(

  13. Good afternoon Aj. Matthew
I have just finish Quiz 1 for CCC.
I think that it is not easy but it is not difficult as well. However, I and my friend tried to do it best.

This article is very popular because it is belief of everyone. When I was young and my parents and I went to the hotel, I always ask my father about 13th floor but he answered me that they forgot to put it!!!!!!!!! It is very humorous after I know the meaning of it. Last Friday, my friend comes to my dorm in the night to do homework. After we finished our homework, she was coming back to her dorm. While she is opening the door, I had just only said that “This is 13th Friday. Be careful!!!!!!!!” She decided to sleep at my dorm in that night. She is very funny girl. For me, my lucky number is 2 because I think that it is a couple number and beautiful to write. It may be not a good reason but it is belief of each person.

For about your question, Is you avowal a problem for your ascription? I think that sometime “Yes” but sometime “No” because it depends on situation in daily life. For example, I want to say “No, avowal is not a problem for my ascription when I come to the university to study because I follow the rule of uniform and participate in the class. My avowal and ascription is the same way.” It doesn’t have a problem. On the other hand, I want to say “Yes, is a problem for my ascription when I come in the library with my friend because we can’t keep quiet that is ascription. We always talk with my friend that is my avowal.” This is my idea about avowal and ascription. If my idea is not clear or incorrect, please let me know.

    Thankkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

  14. Good evening Aj. M

For the number, I have watched the anime (Japanese Cartoon)last several years ago and the story was about the unkucky number in JApanese culture too. They said that 4 is an unlucky number for Japanese people because of its name. The word '4' is pronounced like the word 'death' in Japanese, so that's why there are not the 4th and 13th floor in some hotels in Japan (I just wonder why they pronunce that number like that if it sounds like 'death' and then scary of it - -").

For my personal veiw, I think if we collect all of the unlucky numbers in every culture in the world, then maybe every number is the unlucky number lol.

    Then, back to your question!

    - How ascription is a problem for your avowal. Or opposite: Is you avowal a problem for your ascription?

Well, the ascription that I am a Thai woman is a little problem for me. As we know that Thai woman suppose to be polite, neat, not talk so loudly, sweet, etc. And I am opposite from all these things for real! Thus, when I meet the oldies I have to act like I am a good Thai girl who is completely not me.

However, it's not a big deal for me because I think it is good to have our own style of woman in our own culture. I mean it makes us different from Japanese, American or African girls, and I love it. :-)

  15. Good evening Aj.M

Thanks for information about Friday 13th.

For me, I think avowal and ascription is quite the same. We should learn to be happy with these two things. Sometimes, we need avowal more than ascription. For example, someone believes that Friday 13th is an unlucky day. No one can changes his/her belief. On the other hand, sometimes we need ascription more than avowal vice versa. For example, students should wear uniform to go to university even though they want to wear whatever they want. Anyway, in my opinion, avowal and ascription get on quite well.

    Good night*

  16. For the question, somtimes my ascription and avowel don't get along very well.
The ascription in Thai society, Thai women have to be polite. They have to cook, do chores and talk politely but I'm not. I'm not that polite. I can do chores butI can't cook at all. My cousins always tell me that I should know how to cook because it is the thing that the girls should do and it's charming. When adults ask me that can I cook and I said no,they look surprise. Sometimes I want to give it a try but I give up finally.

  17. I my feeling...I think that everyone hold the different believeing because we believe in a different way or trust in a different thing.
The number 13 too, some may think this no. is a lucky number but some may think it such a bad number.

So, it's up to each of people believing and their attitude toward that believing as well.

    For the question...
" Ascription is a problem for your Avowal? "

It's not a problem for me because I can do both ascription and avowal together by applying both of it. I can be the way I want to be and at the same time I do what I have to do as the main of my duty.

Ascription is a the thing that we have to do and avowal is the thing that we want to do.
So, why it can not bo it both? If it is still "me" who have to do it by follow the rules of ascription and also what to be the way I want to be as an avowal.

I know it's difficult but if we understand both of ascription and avowal,I think we will know how to do it both at the same time.
Moreover, we will feel comfortable to do it by without any bad feeling as well.

  18. Good night, Ajarn Matthew

In the past,I a little know about 13 is unlucky number for western people. However, I still do not know why they apprehend this number so much. As a result is the hotel or whatever places does not has room no. 13.But, I believe that every stories in the world that it must be have their reoson. So, we should not insult their believe because every culture or people must be have the reason why they think like that.

In addition to, Muslim has the believe like that too. They believe that every night before on friday would be have spirit of their relative will be come back to visit them or who they love or worry. So,I do not know, this story true or not but it is tacit that have not somebody to proof it.

  19. Hi Aj. M

Thanks for the good information about Friday the 13th.

For the question,Ascription have a problem to avowal because I cannot do everything that I want. Culture will tell me what I must to be.
Therefore, I have to follow culture.
When I stay at home I can wear shorts or any shirt that I want, but when I go to the funeral with my parents, I have to wear a polite cloth which has black or white tone.

  20. Wow! sound's very interesting again for this topic "Friday the 13th"
I've heard about this superstitious belief for a long time. In my opinion, I think it depends on the language, geography, and belief of each group of people. Some people like, westerners may think that 13 is the unlucky number for them, but for some, 13 is the lucky number; for example, Italians. It's kind of conflict belief among group of people who come from different cultures.

The number is set up to worn people that they should or shouldn't do something. They should be careful on that day or place or whatever that is related to that number. Instead of this, is it better to live carefully everyday of life. So, the bad things will be hard to get into our lives.

However, let me go back to the question about ascription. For me, the ascription and avowal go along quite well in some cases, but sometime it has a little bit conflict. For example, when i was young, the ascription tell us that the girls should wear skirt. Therefore, my mom tried to find many kinds of skirt for me to wear, but for me, i don't like wearing skirt at all. It's not my style, so I refused all the time when she brought those silly skirts to me.

This is the example of the conflict about my avowal and the cultural ascribe.

    Thanks

  21. Oh! It is so interesting.
I just know real meaning of Friday the 13th.
Asian traditions have belief about numbers
as well.I want to share idea with you.

Thais believe number 9 is lucky because
    it means advance.
Chinese believe number 9 is lucky because
    it means long life.
But Japanese believe number 9 is unlucky because number 9 is homonym with KU that Japanese language means difficulty.
At present, most people don’t give
    interesting about numbers anymore
because they think it is old culture and untrue.

Thank you for this question, sometimes I feel uncomfortable about some ascription.
I think university degree should change rule about uniform because it is too strict.
I know wearing uniform looks polite and neat but it is not important to study. Moreover, ascription is quite conflict with my avowal.
I can be myself much more if ascription is
not specifying woman have to be neat and euphemistic. It is not make sense.

  22. Good morning Aj.Matthew

I've ever heard about "Friday the 13th" when I studied in high school. I've heard that every countries that use English for communication believe that Friday the 13th is unlucky day. Many people afraid to go out. Moreover, many countries such as Greece and Spain believe that Tuesday The 13th is unlucky day too.

It's quite funny that many people do not do anything in this day because thay afraid of unexpected event. I think everything is depend on onself. Everybody can design their life. In contrast, they should be careful in everything that they do. I mean thinking before doing.

For me,I'm quite not belife this superstitious however, I'll never try it.

For the question, ascription is not the problem for avowal for me,because I can adapt myself in every place and every situation. "Rule" is designed for everybody to follow. I don't mind to follow the rule of any places that I visit. I think if I go to any places,I can live appropriately.

Sometimes, I want to follow my mine, but I try to stop that idea, because of the rule. If I do not follow the rule of that culture,I'm automatically punnished by people of those culture also.

  23. Morning Aj. Mathew

Well, I've heard about the belief in unlucky #13 number of Western but I never know the real reason why the Western belief like that. So, it is very interesting reason of it. Actually, in Thai I think that have know the number is unlucky. It is have only the lucky number is #9 and I really like it too. I think that it is a good meaning of it because it is mean "Pregress, Develope, Advance or Forward" in Thai. Moreover, we believe that #9 is related with our King as well. Then, many of Thai People love it.

    About the quesion...
I think that our culture writes a script for us to make us know about how to use our daily life properly but some of it are make us comfortable to do that.Likewise, it is quite hard to do what we dislike because improper!
    Somone might say that,but Why?
For me in some case it is hard to accept to me. For example when I speak with friends very lound (my good personality)many people always look at me and seem they think that You are girl? or that is your voice? I swear It's mine!!

So, I know that in Thai culture we have a script for the women should be polite or be a good manner all time but it isn't me. This is my conflict between my avowal and culture script.

  24. Good morning!!!! Aj. Matthew
I think it is interesting topic for me.
I ever heard about Friday the 13th.
I think it is unbelievable, so it depends
on each people because it just only belief.

For me, I don’t believe that
Friday the 13th is not good. It’s just only number.
May be I am a Buddhist.

    For the question!!!!!!
Ascription is a problem for your Avowal?
In my opinion, it’s not a problem for me.
Avowal and ascription is the same thing,
but we can take them to apply in our life.

I feel happy when I follow the rules of culture.
I think if we do follow the rules of culture,
it makes our social are methodical.
For example school uniform. I like it very much
because I think it is entity of Thai students.
It looks polite when other people see.
On the other hand, if we don’t have rules of culture,
it makes Thai social become disorderly as well.
Therefore, if we can adapt avowal and ascription
together, it makes the social are methodical and we will happy in our life.

  25. I have known about the story of Friday the 13th.
My father told me about this story same as the story that you show me.
    Thank you for your idea.

On the last Friday, I wanted to go to Kornkaen University to see my BF.
When I had lunch on that day I called him and told him that I have to do my assignment. I cannot go to there. In fact, I do not have a lot of work like I told him but I did not want to go anywhere. I do not know why. I felt so bad and so tried.

However, I will go to Kornkaen University to see the show of the student in Engineering faculty. It is the first time for me. It is a comedy show. He brought the ticket for me. The show is well known in the name “Nourneer”. The word “Nour” mean delicious in the North east of Thailand. And the word “Neer” is from the engineering. I think it will make me fun.

So far, for your question, I think I do everything in my daily life same as my parents because they have told me what are our culture do. I like Tata yong. I think she is a good child. She wears anything that makes her sexy. I think she look very nice all time and have confident when she talk with other. Sometimes, I like to do same as her.

    Thank you

  26. Good evening Aj. Matthew :)

You are right! There are many beliefs about numbers in Asian traditions also. Here are some examples: In Japan, they think 4 is a bad number. If my memory was right, the sound of number 4 is a homonym with the sound of the word "die". Another example is in Chinese. they also have the reason like the Japanese.

    For the question,
I sometimes have problem with what culture ascript me to do. I don't like to wear a skirt much but in Thai, a girl are taught to wear a skirt. However, I like the way that Thai culture are ascripted. Many Thai culture are very polite, in my opinion.

  27. Hello! Aj.Matthew
When I was a little girl, my brother and I had believed that thirteen was very scary number because it is referred to western rumor and the last special thing is “13” number like the word of ghost in Thai language when we make it in counterclockwise like this “ผี” Actually, it is misunderstanding in my brother and I. LOL
(When I grow up)Friday the 13th is quite long time rumor that I have read from Twelve Ordinary Men. Then this story is involved in twelve disciples who had the last supper with Jesus before he died. Then I had read that the thirteenth disciple is the bad guy who also bad guy who also caused to make Jesus died in the next day. So thirteen is unlucky number and then somebody call this day is Tip Tod Day. In my opinion, it is quite stanged for me because accident or unlucky can be have on everyday which do not specify to have on just Friday 13th. At that time before finished reading, I was very excited in the phobia of Friday 13th which we call Friggatriskaideka phobia!!!! However, this belief is depended on each culture, we will believe or not which is depended on the personal consideration. For me all Fridays are Freaky Friday because there are really traffic jams, too many people go on shopping and no space in the parking lot in many places.

    For your question!
I my self, I am very happy with following the rule because it make my parents are happy. However, I do not follow all rule or ascription, I try to choose the thing or belief that I can do. If that ascription is I can do or it dose not make me get in to trouble, I am willing to do. Actually, sometime I also have a problem with my culture ascription and my avowal and culture script. I was born in a Chinese family; my father and mother are a hundred percent Chinese. They try to teach me in the way of Chinese, teach me in Chinese, including, need me to study Business Chinese major. In contrast, since I was a little girl, I preferred to study Western language and culture. I also decided to study English-French major when I studied in high school. I really realize it is a big problem for me but I love to follow in my own way. I quite sure that one day my parents will understand in me. Therefore, this is my conflict between my ascription and avowal.

Thank you for reading my too long idea.
    Have a good night!!

  28. hey,
I heard the story about 13th friday before. Many people think that it's a bad day. It's true that 13th friday's story has adapt in many culture. I just heard that this 13th friday is the day that jesus christ was killed as Aj. matthew said.
We've never known the truth of the story -- it's a belief. it's tacit knowledge maybe. ^^
From my own experience, thurseday is an unlucky day. My grandmother believes it. in the opposit, she believes that monday is a good day. i'm not sure that it's a thai belief or an indian. i ever ask her about it and she said that she doesn't know because her grandmother teachher that way. --- it might be the belief from our ancient. Therefor,it's hard to know.

In addition, the belief of northern native people is that every 14th of april. they call it "Wan Pa-ya wan" or "Wan Nao" (Pa-ya means King/ Wan means day/ Nao means rotten). The day of the king of the day or The rotten day; people believe that it's a big they. people cannot wash anything. if they do, their life will be bad and the things that they wash will become rotten.

  29. for the question...
-- avowal and ascription is always together but there are sometime that both are being a problems for each other.

it some cases that the ascription is a problem for the avowal. let suppose that i'm indian who was born in america and grow with the american culture, behave like an american, dressed like an american. when i've a chance to go back to india and on the day i reach india, i wear shorts and sleevless top. the thinks that will happen is like people will stare and some gossip that "Look at that girls dress, she might not be indian" or men will stare like they going to kill me. it all because in india tradition, wemen have to dress neatly and behave neatly also. in this case the acription is problem for avowal because ascription is blocked our identity. ascription force us to present the thing that we not are..
In contrast, the case that the avowal is a problem for the ascription. this can explain by using same example. indian people has their own tradition and they are really nationalism, so if we do like i've explained in the example, we will surely be a problem to the ascription of that culture.

  31. I ever know about Friday 13th for ages and I'm also biggest fan of the Friday 13th movie. There are lots of versions and I love horror movies (i think it's not relevance 555) I don't believe about unlucky on Friday 13th or no.13 because I notice from my friends me, when Friday is come my friends are really happy because they usually hang out on Friday because it's the last day of week that they have to go to a university. I have studied in some course in last semester and 13 is my student number in the class. I think it's bad luck in a first place because I got no.13!! , but I got grade B in that course it's really good for me.

For the question, I feel really comfortable with the ascription in my culture because it's not against my avowal. For example, superstition in my culture likes "Don't cut your hair on Wednesday because it's not good; you may get a bad luck". It's not too hard for me to adjust in this prohibition; I can wait to cut my hair on Thursday

  32. Thank you for wonderful story Aj. Matthew

I ever heard and interested in this story before, because I think it is strange, dark and mysterious. For these reasons, there are many people who believe and unbelieve in this story too, you can see in the above comments. Someone believe it is good and someone believe it is bad.

For my opinion, the number 13 present both good thing and bad thing. It depends on the culture in each countries.

    Avowal and ascription

In my life, I think two things are not different because my culture and my behavior are similar. I never feel uncomfortable when they happen in the same time. They are not a problem for my life. But for some people, avowal and ascription can be a problem for them because their behaviors and thier culture are not similar. However, all avowal in each culture is not a problem for people but ascription is a problem for people. There are many reasons for the conflic such as different in thoughts, attitudes, behaviors, norms and patterns.

  33. I have heard about Friday 13th that is unlucky number. I think it's a belief of westerner. When I stuied in high school, one of my friends told me that I had to go home quickly because today is Friday 13th. At that time, I confused about her speech. I did't know why she had to go home quickly especially, Friday 13th. What will be happen with us? Since I remember even Friday 13th is coming, I stand still and don't think anything. Moreover, I never felt unlucky on this day. I still live normally. Nothing happens to me in Friday 13th. I don't intend to disparage a belief but I'm just curious why people think Frifay 13th is unlucky day.

    For the question

I think ascription and avowal can get along together. For example, the law sets a policy for everyone who ride a motorcycle to wear a helmet. Previously, I don't want to wear a helmet because it's not chic and lose hair's shape. Before I go outside, everytime I must hear my parent's voice to tell me to wear a helmet. But now I wear a helmet everytime when I go outside because it help to save my life from the accident. In addition, the mask of helmet can protect me from sunlight.

  34. Good morning aj. M.
Thank you for the great story “Friday th13” ka
I think, this superstition depends on individual’s belief, and we cannot judge exactly if it is unlucky or not. We have learned the history transmitted from our parents and others. When they share the same things then it becomes belief. In Thai culture some people believe that they cannot move to a new place or house on Sunday. I do not know the exactly reasons, but I have learned from my mother and friend, they suggested me not to move to a new dorm on Sunday last semester.

For your question this week: The culture ascriptions and my avowal are going quite well. (Just some ascriptions!) It does not mean that I against the ascriptions, but I try to negotiate what I want. For example; I asked my parents to go traveling in other provinces by myself when I was in high school. They did not allow me to go. The reasons for that was because I was a girl, I might get lose when I was traveling alone, and I could not go alone because I was just a high school student at that time. These reasons were not good enough, so I negotiated by crying and asked them to go to the province that closed to my hometown. Haha
    See you in class. 

  35. I really enjoy reading this everyday. I learn something new every time.

I wanted to respond to one thing from 'sweetsunshine' because I have direct experience of this.

When I was working in India, my close friend from Canada came to visit me. In fact, her parents are Indian immigrants to Canada. Her and I grew up together. She is Canadian, but when she was in India, people clearly expected her to be a good Indian woman...

... well, a good Indian woman doesn't usually walk around with a white man. Many people gave her bad looks. I felt a little bit ashamed, but she understood this culture more than me. It seemed that people thought that she was stranger than me. Her asciption in India did not match her normal life in her home in Canada. One day I can share some photos of this.

    Keep the stories coming.

From the class this morning “Culture and Conflict” :) …I was wondering if we have the conflicts with one another, but nobody listens and thinks of the real points of that miscommunication. For sure, we think that we are right and ethnocentrism. And it will be the war between us and others.
Well…my question is how can we cope with that situation?
..let’s imagine about the protesters in Thailand :(

  37. Hello! Ajarn Matthew

I never heard about your story before. I think it’s surprising because in Thai people believe that 13 is a lucky prime or a lucky number. I don’t know why until nowadays.
As same as in China, almost Chinese people believe that 4 is a bad number because 4 means die but I think it is a fortunate number because I was born in this day. 
It quite funny for me too, about a hotel or high office building in the west that there is no #13 button on the elevator. Why not??? However, everything is depends on the culture in each countries and each person belief as well.

I found a horror movie named Friday the 13th on yesterday. Have you ever seen it ka Ajarn? I think it’s interesting for me. May be, I might be know about the background of the unlucky day.

    For your question,

I agree with some friends that ascription and avowal can get along together. I’m happy with following the rules. For example, in the university has a uniform for students. I think it’s a good thing when everybody dressing up with a correct uniform.
It shows that you’re neat, polite, and respect to the place. Almost ascription is not my problem because I can adjust for doing it in the right way.

  39. Good evening Aj.Matthew

I just understand and can categorize "avowal" and "ascription" from your story and other comments.
I think every countries have the superstition because the ancient may be teach us by tell a horror story or whatever for teaching us do not do bad things. They want us to be a good person. After we listen a superstition, we feel afraid and follow their teaching.

I belief Friday 13th is one of the famous superstition, so people do not like a day because they think that it is a worth day.
I ever read about the story of Friday 13th, it about the last supper of Jesus before he was arrested and death on Friday 13th. That's why westerner hate this day and belief that it is the unlucky number and day.

I usually read your blog, when I see other comments so long. I don't know to comment and forget your question!! ha ha ha

  40. Good evening….Aj.Matthew (^_^)”

In western countries believe that 13 is unlucky number. I don’t know the reason why. For Thai culture, they always believe that 9 is lucky number. They think that when the people want to do something they must choose 9 o’clock.

For my question, I think that ascription and avowal can get along well. In my life, many reason give me to do something with ascription even I don’t like it. For example, I must keep my emotion in some place or situation. Besides, I think that ascription is a good because it can force me to do a good thing.

  41. I have ever heard about this unlucky day; Friday the 13th, but I have never known why. Thank you for you to tell me that why is it being an unlucky day. This belief about numbers occurs in Asian traditions as the western superstition, too. In Thailand believe that number nine is the lucky number because it refer to “Khaw- nah = advancement “ everything is relate with number nine such as the prize of goods always end up with number nine; 59,79,99,159, and 199 Baht. And the lucky time is often end up with number nine, too. For example, 09:09 AM Date 9th Year 2009 is the lucky time.

    For my answer this week:
My ascription is Thai tradition always forbid the women to go in the Buddha's relics area but they can only work around the outside because Thais believe that women is the gender of humbleness, lust, defilement ( having menstruation), and etc. Moreover, some people always perform with women like their slave. However, my avowal is women and men are equal, so I think men should be concern this point hardly.

  42. For me, I think my avowal is a problem for my ascription because my some behaviors are not good and contrast with the ascription. For example, dressing a uniform of the university when I have class; I often dress out of the rule. Another example is copying my friend’s work. Although I realize these behaviors are bad, I still do it. I feel happy and self-confident when I do the things what I want, especially dressing. However, I always think about the propriety of situation that when I can express my avowals to the public; if it does not affect other person, I will do it. I believe everyone has their own avowals, but their avowals will be good or bad, it depends on the situation that they express.

For #13, it might be an unlucky number for many people, but you know it is a lucky number for me. I always meet a good thing when I get or choose #13. It is quite strange, but it is the truth. ^ ^ How about you, Aj. Matthew, what is your lucky number? Is it number 13? ^__^

For me, my social we don’t belief about number at all because we just only belief in God . It is a tacit knowledge that I know why but I cannot express.

For your question, I think my avowal and ascription can get along well together. I feel comfortable for being as right now.

  44. Good Evening Aj. Matthew,

I have heard about Friday 13th for long time ago. And I really do not exxactly what it is.

I just know only it is a bad number or a bad day of western people.

From your question, I think ascription makes us to be different from the others like Thai and Canadian.

We love who we are and I think you love the way you are also.

As the ascrition, avowal makes us different too. We love the way we are and I love the way I am.

Ascription makes us to do the same as others to be respected or get respect from someone.

But sometime, people want to break it because we think that it is wrong or bad.

I had the experience to shared with you.

At one day, my teacher announced us that he wanted us to say YO! better than yes or present when he called our name to make an attendance like American culture.

I really did not like the way he want us to do. So when my tern, I just rose my hand up and said "here".

The reason why I did not do that because I am absolutely 100% Thai. So I did not want to do as other or someone made me to do so.

I told this story to my mom and she said "why you did that? It was impolite!"

Even my mom, she disagreed with it. How sad?

I just wanted to act as my opinion. Was it wrong if I did something which did not same as the others?

Some I follow, but some I do not.

It is my opinion. May be you might understand my reason.

Thank you to read my comment, Aj. Matthew

  45. Hello, teacher.

I think the number 13 is the symbol to show of warning in western culture. In Thailand, there is a number that use in some place. For example, 3 crossroad ( Sam Prang). It is the place that always has accident, lot of dead and spirits. Nobody wants to go or stay in there because they are fear.

For the question, I decide to be avowal or ascription that depend on situation and time because if I choose wrong, it will inappropriate for me and orther.

I heard about this belief before. I heard that for ‘Thais’, they believe number 13 is a lucky number but I don’t know why.

For Chinese people, they also have a belief about number and color. My family is Chinese, and they also believe in the lucky number '8'.

I always remember when my mother woke me up around midnight for paying respect in 09/09/99. She told me that today is a really good day. Anyways, I don’t think it can make my life better.

For your question, I think my avowal and ascription could get along well, but sometime I also want to be myself. However, I think it depends on the situation and how good we can avow our identity in proper time.

  47. Hello, teacher

I have heard about Friday 13th. This day occurs at least once, but at most three times a year. In western culture, many people are belief about it. This day is the day that unlucky or bad day.I think this number is a belief of western culture.

For Thia people, they are belife about 9. They think this is a good number. That mean the progress. For Chinese people, they think about number 8 that is a good number for them.

In each country or each culture, they are different about belief or culture.

Sometime I can choose about the a avowal and sometime I will follow my ascription.

    Every stories are interesting.

For the question,I always have troble situation about relationships. Mostly,Thais are collectivism but not everyone. I'm a type of individualism and I think my behavior is normally that I just aviod to meet people for long time. But my friends always misunderstand that I must have problems. That's so boring to explain and I quite differ from others.I always have the argument with friends who alway try to ask me why. However,I behave as the others such as dressing, social duties or anything that should do.

I think we should choose our feeling first, the others do not stay with us forever!

Thank you for every good stories and question.

  49. Some interesting comments here.

Pui: I understand your comment and your feeling. You have correctly found the real point of this discussion. How to find the middle if we do not honestly listen? There can only be conflict. I believe the yellow shirt/red shirt conflict in Thailand is partly cultural: cultural distance between rich and poor, educated and uneducated, urban and rural... I believe there are honest misunderstandings between these cultures in the political debate.

sweetsunshine: I worked with the Canadian government and with Non-government organizations in India. I was an education researcher. I will share more about this experience... very life-changing time.

And Luck: Thank you for your story. It is a good example of avowal and ascription. Your mother was annoyed with you because you didn't follow the ascription (a student should follow the teacher... if not: impolite!), and instead you followed your avowal (you did not want to do like Americans do)...

I do not think you were wrong, but I also do not think that your classmates were wrong for participating... What do you think?

  51. I don't know if it's too late for this but I'll write anyway. I have some avowel that is against Thai ascription. I always belive what something that typical "Thai" do not. Sometimes a lot of people say that I am not polite because I speak the "Truth." Sometimes people say that I'm not polite because I do not want to "Wai" politicians or my former high school principal. These are only a couple things that I did but there are a lot more. Anyway, I still do not understand why a lot of people say that Thailand is a free country but everyone is not equal "AT ALL." I think these ideas of mine might cause Thai acription some problem.

  52. Good afternoon aj.Matthew
Friday 13th is cool in the topic when this day coming in each week. I ever heard about number 13 in wertern is a bad thing in their life. When I compare with Thai culture or Eastern philosophy have an idea about the number but in the best meaning that is number 9. Number 9 in Eastern means that so lucky all the time like the word in Thai say "ก้าว" but the bad or fear number in Eastern I'm not sure about that. By the way, if werstern's belief that friday is the bad day for us. For me, everyday is good. It depends on my action/performence in each types which I had done. If I do something bad, the reason will be bad too. It is just my opinion. From your question, about how ascription is a problem for your avowal. I can answer that may be a problem and may be not a problem. If we want to do something, we will find other way to supports or solve about our performance. But we have to think carefully about the performance a lot becuase some of your performance can tell your behavior.

  54. When I was younger, I used to believe that Friday the 13th was a very bad day. Bad things always happen. I also believed that 13 was an unlucky number. As for now, I don't believe in it anymore. I cannot remember when I stopped believing in a superstition of the unlucky day. Number 13 is only a number; I don't think that number could harm you. If I still believe in it, I wonder whether I would be so worry and do things differently from now because my ID ends with 13 :s The funny thing about this is while many people think 13 is an unlucky number and it brings you a bad luck, I think it's kind of my lucky number.

Let’s talk about ascription and avowal. I don’t think that my avowal is a problem for my ascription because I can be what others want me to be and act as what others want to see. As well as be a person who I want to be, do anything that I want, and live happily in the society. I think the reason of this is I don’t give much attention to what others think about me. However, I used to care too much about others’ opinions and I wasn’t happy about myself at all. As Thai people often say that girls should be quiet and well-behaved; girls shouldn’t scream, talk too loud, show their emotions too much, or do anything that doesn’t look appropriate. Well,…..sometimes being all that isn’t fun. I mean if you always sit still and be quiet, how you can be happy and have fun with your life when you have to pretend all the time. I’m glad I wasn’t born in the ancient time lol.

Have a really good weekend :)

I also wondering about number 13. Why is it unluckey? 13 is luckey number for me because I was born on 13th but not friday 13th. not only tall hotel in bankok but also the hospital do not have 13 floor. I think 13 is unluckey number for someone who believe but not me. For me it is just only an ordinary number. Anyway, from the picture it looks like the poster of movie. i really like this movie and i like Jason. ^^

Back to your question, from the question for me ascription and avowal can adapt together.
Sometimes i choose avowal and sometimes i choose ascription. I pround to be myself. On the other hand, I pround to be daughter, sister or student also.

    Have a great weekends ;D

  56. Hi, Aj. Matthew

Today is Friday but it’s not 13th as same as the topic :)

I knew about Friday 13th before and I believe that in Thailand has this believe too.
From my experience, I knew that Thai people always do the important thing or activity on their birthday; they would be fixed their birthday on one week to do their activity because they think that it is a lucky day. I don’t know about other Thai people has believe or do like this as same as me or not.

For your questions, I think ascription in Thai society is quite problem for me in some ways because Thai people spend their life with their own culture and tradition. However, it maybe disturb me in some way but I think all of thing which are strict us are the best thing that our ancestor was created to the next generation to follow them.

  57. For the question, I think, ascription is not a problem for my avowal because most cultures have rules that are appropriate to other people in the culture practice. The ascription that I saw, there are neat and tidy for that society. For example, ascription in organizations, they have uniforms and rules for practice in office. Or in university, students have uniform; black skirt and white shirt. They are good looking with same uniform.

About Friday 13th is unlucky, I do not believe it because I think everything that happen with me it depend on I do. Although I do not believe this day, I do not careless.

  59. Hi Aj Matthew

    How do you do?
Thanks for your interesting story about #13.
Actually I knew that #13 is an unlucky number for western cultures but I had no idea about the origin of such belief. Anyway, it's good to know!

I actually don't very believe the idea of #13 because many people were born on 13th and they are happy with their lives, they can be miserable or elated like other people born on other dates so, I avow myself not to take such ascription.

And the..... about the question. To me, I convince my avowal isn't a problem to anywhere I live in because I think I behave and adapt well, I don't cause troubles to others, I live my life trying best to stay in peace without disturbing others (Just think!). But as my cultures have written many long papers of script for me to follow so, I think that is a problem to my avowal.
Sometimes, I don't like to believe in something that obsesses me, scares me and misleads me to the way I am not. This, several times, brings me conflicts with my people and others around or even my own self. (Sorry, I couldn't think of an example!)

Alright! That's my answer and thank you for a difficult-to-answer question! By the way, I was born on 13th.

    Enjoy your weekend

  60. Hello! Aj.Matthew

It might be a script from someone, but I believe in Fridat 13th. I was born on 13th, but it is monday 13th. I usually met a bad sittuation in Friday 13th. I will tell the bad sittuation of past Friday 13th.

In the morning, I found a big snake obstruce the way in front of my dormitory. I fulminant put a brake and dodged it. That sittuation made me pay more attention to ride a motorcycle to the university, but it was not enough. In the evening while I came back from the downtown, There was a drunk man ride motorcycle extremely dangerous pass me and he crashed a car in front of me. I think to that sittuation later, if a thing that he crash is not a car, but it;s me. What is going on.

  61. Hi Aj. M

I'm very fearful about Friday the 13th.

I fear ghosts so much, then I cannot stay alone in everywhere.

For the question,I think my avowal quite different from ascription. I don't like the rules, I don't like pattern. Since I was young, I must live in the frame that my mom assigned. Thus, if I have a chance to choose, I will do something that I want to be, although it is something that different from society, it can accept from society.

For example, wearing the uniform in the winter.Female students have to wear short skirt that the wind can pass. It's so cool. But male students can wear trousers or jeans. It's quite unfair for female students. If female students wear trousers, jeans or stocking go to the class, the officer will be publish them because it's not correct in the rules of university.

For me, I don't care any rules. I'll do it for saving my health and my life.

I have ever heard about Friday 13th is a very bad day but I never think that it is very serious day until hotel or high office building in the west does not have no #13 button on the elevator or even there is no 13th floor. In Islam Friday is unlucky day as well because there is assign in alqur-an that Friday is the end of the world’ day.

About the question for this week

For me an ascription that the culture writes is going together with my avowal especially uniform, the reason is if all of students wear uniform it is like a symbols that all students have to follow the rule, to respect institution .Therefore, I think it is good if all students perform in the same way. Suppose!!!! if the culture did not write the uniform for students and allow students wear whatever they prefer, what will going on with students. I think it will come a lot of problem for students such as discrimination between students.

However, ascription is not always the good thing it also has some part that we need to adjust.

  63. Hello Aj.Matthew

If western believe number 13 is bad or unlucky. I think number 4 is bad in eastern especially Thailand and China including Japan too. In eastern believe number 4 always related with dead. For example, Japan pronounce number 4 is sound like the word 'dead'.

For question, I think I can do like my avowel together with ascription. However, I want to do something that I want, but I understand 'we cannot do everything as we like it'.

  64. Well, in my culture also has a belife in number. I have heard that people believe that no. 4 is an unlucky number since it is about or related to death, especially in funeral, but I do not know why and what it is; for me, I am not quite believe in this. However, sometime, when I see or listen something about the number for example one of my relative - he changed the number of his license plate and he told this to my family. He said that after he had changed the number, he was lucky and I have seen that he was really lucky at that time. Therefore, I think the sentence that my grandma told me "If you do not believe, do not mock it" might be used for warning something which I think that is ascription that our culture belife (Thai belife in superstition for example ghost), but for me, I believe in the thing that I have see or experienced and that affects my avowal. ^^

  66. belief that everything is arises from our behaviors. The number is only the number. The friday 13th is only one day in each day. We cannot confirm that number "13" is the good or bad number, but we can do the best in our life.

For the question, I do not mind about anything in Thai social, but I have only one problem that I hate it very much. That is the exam. I do not like the exam because this system cannot estimate the knowledge of student by deeply. Most of Student remember the information for the exam only and after the exam, they forget every information and they cannot adapt it to their lives.

That is my answer. I am sorry very much for my late answer because this week I have many things to do and clear them.

    Have a good day!!

  67. Hi, Aj.Matthew

I heard that before. It's true. When I was an intern at Siam Pura Resort hotel and siam City hotel. They don't have room number 13. It's very surprise for me that it looks like so strict. Nobody wants to stay at munber 13. But foe me, It's fine. The culture is the determination of this thing. We are diferent culture therefore we are different belief.

  68. I've heard a lot about Friday the 13th. It also affects to me so much when other people know that my birthday is 13th, but I'm not worried about it.

For the question about the ascription that I want to adjust. I'm thai girl. I was taught to be neat and polite like most of thai women are.

I can be like that when I meet the adults or my relatives, but I can't be like that al the time. When I meet my friends, I want to be my own characteristic. It's quite funny that sometime I act like boys, so my friends call me "Somchai", this name use to call a really man, but actually i'm a girl.

  69. Hello!! Aj.M
How are you in your holiday?
Friday 13th is so scary for some Thais. As you told, there are bad things happend on this Friday. I'm not sure that every country will believe with this scary Friday 13th.But for sure in Thai, it is a rumor for long time that I've heard since I was so young. In my opinion, eveyday is always good days for me. It's up to what I did or behave on a day not other. However, I wouldn't like to challenge other believe. It's just the individual feeling.

    For the question this week!
some ascription that my parents set on the way I didn't like anymore is a problem for my avowal. For example, I'm a girl that can't go outside or hang out at night even with my good friends. They always think that it isn't appropriate to do this because I am a woman. A woman should be neat and do a good thing in other eyes. They always set the rules for me. Sometimes, it's over to accept and follow the rule because I who have the feeling want to do something that make me feel free. It isn't a matter if the thing I do doesn't make anyone hurt. I don't want to blame my parents. It maybe right to teach their child because they love, would like to take care and worry about them. However, I want a freedom sometimes even I'm a woman. the way I act maybe break the rule of my family's culture or old thought, but finally I still do something on my way. sometimes, I stay up late at night in outside such as shopping with my best friend.

Because it's me, it maybe not right for my culture, but it's not too bad to behave it. this is just something in my life, but overall, I do follow my culture's ascription if it's a serious matter.

I believe that everyone face some problem between the ascription and avowal. It's a normal thing!! If it's not, I think everyone maybe mad cause of rules that our cultures try to make us be like that. We still have individualism and there is somethings we don't like to do if other force us to do.

    See you next class
    Have a good dream

    Thank you for your comment.

For my opinion, I think that my classmates were not wrong because they followed the ascription of our teacher. But for me, I do not think that I was wrong also because I followed my avowal to show that who I am.

Anyway, I respect to others who can make me feel respected to them. So some I do not.

For this story, I think we [my teacher and I] still be friend. I want to say that . . .

"In the game, we are the opponent. But in the end, we are friend".

Thank you for sharing the opinion.

    Thanks for sharing Friday 13th.
I used to wonder why Friday 13th is an unlucky day, but now I know exactly l about belief or western superstition.

From the question, ascription and my avowal are going together. I don't know why I feel like that, may be the percept form my family. I were taught from my parents or other's state.
I'm get along with my culture quite well. I can adapt the new thing into life. I believe in spirituality because I have an experience to tell you. Once I felt very headache like my brian will explode, and my grandmother know well what happened to me. She used my cloth touch lightly on my body then she went to spiritualist's house. After that she came back and said something and blow my head. I felt better; I didn't have an headache anymore. I was surprise why my headache was gone; it's very curiously.

Thank you for your good story. I just know about some foreigners afraid or some hate on number 13, but I have never known about the reason. After I learned the lesson from you, I think it is one kind of “tacit” that I can see in my real life. Back to your story again, I think that it depends on each country that has some thing that they cannot accept. Most things are relevant to their cultures. Besides, if I have more obvious consideration, I can observe that each country has the different beliefs. For example, not only Farangs afraid of number 13, but Taiwaneses also afraid of number 4. When I went to visit my parents, who live in Taiwan, every year, I usually asked my mother that where the fourth floor was. It was the bad number that the sound was like the word that means death was reason that I received. It was the answer that my mother still cannot explain more.

From your question, sometimes I believe in the ascription that social or culture needs me to follow, but sometimes I do not believe. However, even though some cases are difficult to believe, I do not dare to do it. For example, Thai ancients said that children must not play out side in evening, because the ghost will take them to other place and cannot come back forever. In this case, I know that there is not ghost in the world but I still believe.

In terms of ascription, I think that some ascriptions do not have much role for my avowal if my behavior does not make others get problems. However, some ascriptions are problem for my avowal. For example, I have ever needed to learn Thai and international dance major in University because of my talent, but Thai social is not open about male teacher in this career. That is why I have to change my dream.

On the other hand, I think that my avowals are not problem for my ascription. Before I do some things, I usually think that will is make problem. If the answer is yes, I will stop it because my live need to get the peace not to get more problems.

Lastly, I need to thank you Aj.M that gave the critical questions for me.

  74. thank you for your sharing, Aj. Matthew. About Friday 13th i used to heard for long time ago.

My friend who study at Assumption University told me, the building university don't have the 13th floor. [I am not sure with it anymore, i just heard] I think it is funny because this is Thailand and we not believe in this even this university is an international.

In Thailand, we believed in #9 because the meaning of the number which means continue going on and on. You can see at car registration in Thailand.

For the question of this week!

I can't tell you that ascription is a problem for my avowal or my avowal is a problem for my ascription.

Ascription, I break the ascription sometimes but normally I follow the ascription. I break it when I see it is silly or old fashion. I don't mean old fashion is not good but some time it is too old to do in this time. As a curfew of the university's dormitory which is you cannot entrance to the dorm after 10.30 pm. I think it is very silly, I am a university student and old enough to take care myself. Even I know it is a goodwill from adult but I think it is not fair for me. However, I still entrance the dorm before 10.30 pm.

I forgot to tell you one thing, My lucky number is 13 because my student ID in high school is No.13 and I use it for 3 years. I feel like it is my number. I do love No. 13.

  75. I never heard about this belief but I ever heard the movie named "Friday The 13th"
which is made from that belief as you have said.
This movie is about the murderer names Jason, will comes out to kill people on every Friday The 13th.
He always wares a white Hockey mask and hold his big knife as a weapon. Therefore, When The 13th meet Friday, the ruin will meet you.

Each countries have their own lucky number, for example, 8 for China,
but I never heard about unlucky number in Thai society. We have only lucky number which is 9 (kaw) means forward or get ahead.

Actually, I will follow ascription, if those rules are reasonable.
As we know, not every rule are reasonable so I won't follow that ascription. For example, the dormitory rules as Yotaka has said above.

  76. Good morning Aj. Matthew…

For Friday the 13th, I just know that is the bad day or unlucky number of western people. However, thank you a lot for sharing the important knowledge and make me clear about that.

For Thai society, some of Thai people believe that the 13th also the unlucky number. Some of my teacher said that is the unlucky number because when we reverse the number, it becomes a Thais word “Phee” (that means ghost.) Therefore many Thais scare of the number 13th.

For me, I do not scare for this number. I believe that the unlucky day can come to us every time we breathing. So what? Should we scare about that? I think not; it can make me feel bad and cannot start a new good thing in my life.

For the question, the ascription is a problem for my avowal. Also, I think my avowal is a problem for my ascription.

I love the way I walk and that’s avowal but sometimes, it is a problem in my society.

Moreover, I love the way of my society or ascription however, it is a problem for my avowal.

I have an example from my experience in many years ago.

When I was 3 or 4 years old, I went to the preparing child school. My teacher assigned me homework for doing an exercise in a book; I must follow the instruction and create a picture. After I back home, I hurried to do my homework.

    It was very fun!
I liked it a lot. Then, one page finished, two pages, tree… the end of the book.

I known that was my avowal but my teacher assigned me just one page. In Thailand more than 10 years ago, we must follow every teacher rules. Teacher is right! That is the way of Thai learning people. However, I broke the rules; I could have a punishment. Nevertheless, I hoped that my teacher might be understood.

Next day at school, I was called over that I was a bad girl who did not follow the teacher’s instruction.

I hate it a lot – it is not the way of learning.

I came back home and cry… That was a trouble time of my life. For that reason, I think the ascription is a problem for my avowal and I also think my avowal is the problem of ascription.

I am the one who walk on my own but also, I still following the ascription because I cannot walk alone on this world.
Thank you for reading my comment.

  77. Lazy Sunday... too cold outside.

Excellent comments and stories. You have given me a lot to think about.

I wonder about myself too. In my culture, it teaches me to go away... to leave my family, to become successful, to be independent, etc.

I love my life in Chiang Rai. I love my job and my students. I love to teach. Thailand and Thai culture has changed me in very deep ways. However, I am terribly homesick sometimes. I miss my culture, my family, the Canadian nature, and my dog. But then I know if I go back, I will miss my job, my students, and my life in Chiang Rai. My ascription and avowal are always in conflict, and I don't know if there is a way to resolve it.

I really appreciate you and this course. It has been an excellent start.

  78. Dear, Aj, Matthew

I will add more information about recent question that I didn't answer yet.
Actually, I try to think very hard to answer this question but I can adapt everything to my avowal. I don't want to be a conflict with someone or something. I am easy going and optimistic. I love myself. I don't like to pretend myself to be something or someone. I obey my parent as well. They trust me when I want to do something. I always care everyone near me whem I need to do something but someimes I love myself more than others. Because no one can believeable.
I hope that it can be a good opinion for you although it isn't good answer. TT

From this article, I have heard it before, but I don't know why are the foreigners feel scare this day. from this article can make it clear for me. However, I have known that the westerners don't like the number 13, but I don't know about Friday. Thank you for your article that makes me more clever.

For the question this week, I would like to say that I feel comfortable with the script. When I stay home, I will be polite, neat, and tidy because my mother wants to be like that. But I feel comfortable because I was be like that since I was young until the high school. Then I came to the university, new things came to me. I adjust myself but I prefered new things very much. It seemed like myself very much. I could do anything I wanted. I could wear a sexy clothing. I could be talk shrilly with my friends. It was wonderful for me. However, when I came back home at the holiday, I feel uncomfortable because I couldn't do something that I could do in Chiangrai. I had to act as a polite girl, but I thought it was very funny for me. I think the environment can make me change something and moreover, I prefer to adjust myself to the environment as well. So that why I feel comfortable when I face with new things.

  80. Hi, Aj. Matthew

Today is Sunday; it is a nice day to relax and to do any assignments. For this week, the topic about Friday 13th; it is very very interesting. I also have something to share with other classmates and Aj. . There are a lot of beliefs in any places of the world for a long time, and remain to present. The beliefs were told by ancestors to newt generation, some beliefs also effect to our daily life. As I known not only the belief about the day in western superstition; Friday 13th, but Thai also have. I would like to share some beliefs that I have heard; Monday, cut the hair in this day, you will be charm. Wednesday, do not wear the new clothes because the clothes will be musty. Moreover, do not cremate, cut the nails and hair on Wednesday, the belief that this is the bad day. About Sunday, the belief in moving to the new place, do not move in this day because this day is hot (may be included spiritual of the house owner), the house owner will be unhappy. Especially Thai people, they are superstitious; believe in number, they always look for the lucky day from the calendar before doing something to expect the good thing will happen to their selves.

For the question; how ascription is a problem for your avowal. Or opposite: Is you avowal a problem for your ascription?

In my point of view, I’m a person who usually does something avowal both attention and inattention because it is my way to show I am be I am. Although something that I am being, some people especially adult think that it is not appropriate because I am a girl. For example, if I stay at home, my parents cannot allow me to come back late after 22.00 o’clock. For me, sometimes I want to join with my friends at the party may be come back late than they set the time but I cannot. I know my parents very care me and the time isn’t appropriate but I already take care myself; they should let me go in my mind. Thai social still see woman who already have family should stay at home to be a good housewife. Nowadays social changed, some women can work outside as well as men. So, all of ascriptions aren’t proper in every situation, but we can adjust and make its go along with our daily life.

I would like to say “apologize” to come to class late because some reason, however I will try to come to class on time. Thanks for your kindness. >______<”

I agree that Friday the 13th is a day that people must be very careful because my family is believe in Friday the 13th too. They will not let me go outside the house if not necessary and we always go to bed very early on Friday the 13th.

For your question, I think I feel comfortable with the script that my parents taught and I can adjust it. I don’t think that is a problem for my avowal.

  82. Hello...AJ. Matthew

I have heard about this story before and I also watch some movies
which are talking about the bad things on Friday 13Th. I use to ask
my English teacher about this bad luck, but I get nothing.
It seems like some Thai culture that has no reason to do it such as
we always step the left foot before the right one for our lucky.
Some of Thai people have to pay respect to the Buddha
before they do the new business or some uncertainly issue.

About yore question for this week, I have to say that
I’m not a girl who has many problems about my own culture.
May be, I have some knowledge about my culture.
I know that my ancients warn me because they worry about me.
They know what are good or bad things for me,
so they have to made something
to make me scare to do the bad things.
Another thing that makes me clam is my parents.
They teach me as same as the western style.
They want me learn by myself.
When they have to go to work they allow me to go with them.
I love to do that, because it can help me to understand more about the value of money.

Even though I’m a good girl, I want to step out of the Thai flame.
When I was 15, I saw my friends have the wonderful ear ring on their ears.
Someone had more that 2 pairs. I knew it was some nonsense thing for my life
and my dad didn’t like it. But I wanted it. So I went to the department store and pierce my ears.
I love it, but one pair is not enough for me.
I had 4 pieces for the right one and 3 pieces for the left.
When I got home, my dad was very angry about me.
He jerked my new ear rings out of my ears. Oh! I couldn’t explain how I feel.
I didn’t know why he had to upset, but didn’t want to challenge him.
So, I decided to leave it only one pair. It made him satisfy.
Hm…until this day I don’t want to clash with his rules.
I think I have my freedom in the flame of my dad.
But that flame is very large for me to exercise with the new trends.
My dad understands about it, but it should be moderately.
So, I can live with the Thai Ascription without the problems.
    [ though I don’t like it sometimes]

I do not like to talk much with other people even my relative. my parents always force me to talk with other people in order to make a good relationship with people. I am not big headed but i am not talkative. i prefer silence. sometimes, i feel uncomfortable when i lived among people, especially unknown people. i do not like social. i like calm. i think making a good relationship is not just only talk, but there are a lot of ways to do. so, this is my problem.

For the question, my ascription is not 100 percents opposite to my avowal. I feel uncomfortable if I met unknown people and I have to act properly to them as usual. It is a socail manner. I show respect to other because I wish to recieve respect from others also. My interpeosonal skill is quite well but sometime I'd like peaceful time for my restless mind.

I personally dont think about friday the 13th that much because I'm now in Thailand! ;)

but if I would be in western country I would probably feel abit afraid hehe :D

    well, ascription vs avowal ..
uhmm it seems so hard to say that my avowal is a problem for my ascription, but i do think that it is

because it is me who was born just 20 years and my family and my cuture have taught me the ascription .. they put me on the right way .. and tell me how should I travel, but it is becoz of my avowal that brings me out of that way ..

I do believe that what my culture teaches is good

there is no reason to break the rules .. but sometimes i did..
and I always feel sad when I look at my parents

as I have told .. the ascription was built so long and have been teaching time by time .. and it still occur ..
but I'm just 20 years old and my avowal was born last 20 years ..
so I think my avowal is a problem for my ascription but anyway, Ikeep doing coz it shows who i really am

  86. I used to break my parent’s rule. They always told me to pay attention in class and come to class every time. However, sometimes I feel like I don’t want to come to class. Therefore, I go to Big C or Internet Café instead of attend to the class. This action is conflict with my parent’s rule which is ascription. I go to Big C and Internet Café is my way of living which is avowal.

That is my problem. However, this is not a big problem because I never talk about my action to my parent.

Exactly, Thailand's tradition have the belief

about numbers also. For example,#9 is a lucky

number for Thai because it means the progress.

For the question, I normally do not have any

problems with my ascription but sometimes it

has. For instance, I always talk to my friends

with the vulgar language because it is not a

formal situation as talking to the elder. For

the old tradition of Thai, there was a vulgar

language for talking each other in the past

because it was the first language of Thai.

Therefore, Thai language is developed to have

more polite and uses it as a formal language

in the present, on the other hand there are

many people around us still talking the vulgar

    language.

  90. Good evening, Aj. Matthew

I have heard about Friday 13th is unlucky number and day during I was in high school, but I do not know why. therefore, thank you so much for sharing the interesting knowledge.

This tradition belongs to western. I believe 13 is the bad number for me, but I do not think Friday is the bad day because it is my birthday and it is the beginning of weekend. I can do everything that I want to do in my freetime without many rules. For example, watching movie with my friends, doing many assignments and so on.

I am always happy every Friday because it makes me feel the rest of time will be longer than Sunday.

For the question, I think ascription makes me feel bad sometimes.

My father and mother are Chinese, so they are the same as others who love son more than daughter. I wonder why Chinese do choose one of them. In spite of the fact both of them are children.

In this case, it makes me not care. I live in my own way and do whatever I want. Sometimes, when I feel uncomfortable that I'm other, I try to adapt myself to environment as much as I can.

    Thank you

  91. Hi aj. M.
Thank you for your comment.:) You make me clarify about red and yellow shirts. I do agree with you that they are misunderstanding, and they have their own reasons. Moreover, there is a cultural distance between those people. Most of poor, uneducated, and rural people follow rich, educated and urban people because they do not know if it right or wrong. Unfortunately, they are some kinds of tool for those people who are educated, and rich to get some beneficials. It is absolutely unfair for them.
I have one example when I was an English Camp volunteer in Chaiyaphum. There was one woman (she cooked for all of volunteer staffs) shared to me that there was a rich forced her to be a part of protesters, if not her farms would be burnt. For this reason, she was the one of protesters because she was afraid of that power. She had no choices, and she did not know how to negotiate with that rich person. :( I think, it is not her fault because she has to protect her family, her farms and herself.

  93. For this question, I had to take like a day to decide which part of ascription or my avowal was the problem. After 6 days I found that I had no answer for this question!!!!

Finally, I might say that my avowal is the problem to the ascription. To clarify, it happens when I look at the CCC book that I have to participate on this blog. I don't like writing in public. I don't feel confident or comfortable to write any thing. It is such hard time for me to start doing this. My avowal tells me to ignore this blog but you make a "script" for me to participate. I have to follow ascription of this course.

    Thank you.

  94. Hello, Aj. Matthew ^_^

It's almost the next day now.
Well I've heard about "Friday the 13th" but I don't really scare of it. It might be the reason that in Thai society, we prefer thinking about auspicious just like 3, 7, 9 rather than 13 particularly Friday.

Anyway, about your question for this week, as a daughter and a student I am trying to be good enough along with the script. I avow to do what I should do for my family's ascription and not to be a black sheep in case of university's ascription. Furthermore, I adjust to preserve the Thai traditional script. However, sometimes I feel uncomfortable with some ascription.
For example, since Thai culture consists humbleness, I cannot really express my feelings or thoughts directly toward elder. Even though they are wrong and I would like to share my ideas, I have to be silent or defer with them just because they have more experiences.

Hopefully, I can do something different and let them know that we have to adapt ourselves with globalization as well as learn how to keep Thai traditional beliefs together.

  95. Good evening sir.

In my opinion, The 13th Friday or the number thirteen is not make people unlucky. It is unreasonable to frightful or scare with this number. Everything is only the imagination of human. Most of people dislike the 13th number. For my experience, i used to have ID 13th in class for three years but there are nothing bad happen to my life.

The Friday is the best day for let the worry from whole work and begin to relax on weekend. I think if it is the 13th, everybody will happy for rest in weekend.

  96. In Thailand also has some kind of belief like this. But I did not care about that belief too much,I just do what I want to do but did not disparage that.

For the question, I think my avowal did not get along well with the ascription.

My father always ask me to get a driver's licence which he think every Thai men should have it. But I do not want to because my hometown is Nonthaburi where is close to Bangkok. There is a lot of good transportations which are buses, vans, motercycles, taxi, BTS, MRT, Tuk-Tuk, and so forth. It is easier to go anywhere with all this transportations than drive a car by yourself. That why I do not want to do it.

  97. My 13th Friday is almost about belief in ghost. In Thailand or even other countries in Europe also believe in this story. From the story we have heard is in every Friday which in the date of 13th, the ghost that is obstructed in somewhere or anyplace will be released for one day. And I don't want to go anywhere in midnight of this day.

  98. 13 is absolutely not unlucky number.
It's just an old thought and belief as well.
I think 13 can be both good and bad, however it depends on their individual opinion above 13.

From your question, I found that I always have a conflict between avowal and ascription. Actually, I don't like to follow any rules in my life because sometomes breaking the rules is quite challenging me very much ^ ^

Have a nice night ka , Aj. Matthew

  99. thank you about your topic. I know that more people thaink number 13 is lucky number for someone but it is nothing for someone too. It show that people in society have diferent believe. And then I will tell you about ascription of my family. My parents and family want to see me as good girl. They hope me to do the things that good but sometimes I never want to do that.

For example, they never want to see me wear shorts and go out side after 8 p.m.

In my opinion, it is nut. because I see my friends can do it but i cannot. And I know my parents wish me well but I think something that detain me in the box and think I have not my freedom.

So, the things that my parents hope me to do is ascription but My avowal is the thing that I want to show...It is me but it may be bad for their hope.

  100. Hello Aj, ^___________^

    it's next day already. =)

For your question this week, i surely comfortable with ascription and it cans get along with my avowal as well too. There is quite no problem. Thai's script creats Thai people to be a good porson for their families, humble, smile, kind, and so on. I love my culture and i thought i just like in that case too. However, i thought it maybe depends on culture i've lived too; for example, Thai's culture i've lived and recieved time by time, i should be polite, kind, smile, and so on. I did. One more, we also can't kiss with someone at public like the western do coz it's not our culture too. i never do. For my family's culture, i often do follow them want me to do. i less breake out of script or rule. I thought i'm lucky that they couples repect my thought, and we can talk together then find out the best way for both of us too. On the other hand, in the Unversity, Scription of them wants student wear long skrit and black shoe but i less do it. Therefore, i think it depends on culture where i've lived. I over all that it's not hard to follow scription and to be avowal.

    Good night Kra Aj, M.
    night night =)
    See you on Tue.

  102. Hello Aj.Matt, =)

    Good very early morning ka!!

How was your weekend in cool season? Enjoy skiing?? Just kidding ka LOL

Anyway, welcome new day with new season. Keeping warm up for the cool season…Uploading fresh….lol

Many students’ ideas here are like the snow that heavily fall down from sky. :) However, Thailand doesn’t have any snow. I wish someday snow will be coming for us, but right now just suppose it first :P LOL So, I will grab and put them (obtaining many new ideas) into my bucket (my memory), and synthesize them as my new and useful knowledge. =)

This is the early time of cool weather, maybe it’s too cold for me here in CR. Switzerland of Thailand LOL So, I prefer to stay inside more than outside.. haha (Freezy!!) How sad 3rd year EL. major students are!! We must get up early in every morning for attending 8:00 AM. class. T___T We’re going to be ice shape.. Being snowgirl and snowman!!

By the way, thank you a lot about deep detail of No.13 and Friday 13th. I’ve got new knowledge from you again. I really love it!! So excited to wait for new cultural ideas. SHARING IS GREAT!! <3 :P >0<

Huh… it seems this morning my head cannot let my ideas out like I expect. Maybe, it is just stuffed with a lot of fog in the early morning. My ideas are clouded. :( So sleepy…. I just slept in front of my labtop for a few minutes. Zzzz

How would I say… - -a (I am trying to charge my energy with new ideas.) -..-

    WAKE UP plzzz….

Umm…Actually, each culture has its own beliefs such as Westerner and Asian. Number is also concerned with good and bad luck though. As I’ve already got this deep detail from you, I’m just aware a lot about this superstition. Anyway, I’ve already thought about this before but not much. I graduated from Christian Primary School and I always attended my school’s activities. At that time, I was so young and didn’t understand what they did, but now I got it. I can’t imagine that westerner also has this superstition because all the time I understood that they seem to only believe in fact. So, there are a lot of science researches in order to prove the truth in Western.

Well, let’s see about Asian’s belief. We also have number belief. Thais believe that No.9 is lucky because it’s pronounced like “Kaw” in Thai. “Kaw” means stepping on, moving forward, or going beyond….(Kaw Nah)…Moreover, as I was born in Chinese family, we have this belief as well. No.6, 8, and 9 are lucky for Chinese people. No.6 means long life. No.8 means wealth and prosperity. No. 9 means eternal. On the contrary, unlucky number for us is “4” because its pronunciation is like the word “death” in Chinese. This is my personal experience that I know and love to share with you and others here. :)

By the way, it’s hard to clarify that why avowal and ascription sometimes cannot get along with each other, or why they are not in the same direction for us. I think it depends on our personal thought. As you have mentioned above, ascription is like the rule or order that society expect us to follow. It’s good if we can follow but sometimes it’s non-sense or useless in some occasions. I will give you an example about my case here. For example, women should wear skirt in formal ceremony such as “WAI-KRU” in school. I don’t like to wear skirt because it’s uncomfortable for us. I feel uncomfortable every times when I must wear skirt. The way I walk, sit, or even move my body is not natural. Women should be careful with their manner, especially when we wear skirt. I think wearing trousers is more comfortable. I prefer this cloth. This is my ascription problem.

    MiNGMiNG 503-1006-031 Section 01

    Ps. Continue on...

    ReplyDelete
  103. Another I would say is that my avowal and ascription sometimes cannot go to the same direction, so the conflict is actually happened with my both sides – angel and evil. They argue with each other near my ears. One gossips near my left ear, and another gossips near my right ear. Sometimes, it’s hard to choose which one is better for me at that moment. Anyway, I will carefully determine and choose it by myself. Depending on the flexible or contingency time!! For example, in case of ascription, students should finish their homework before entertaining themselves. I always break this rule because I’d love to relax and enjoy myself first. So, I can brush up my ideas, thoughts, or even reorganize my knowledge from these activities such as surfing for the internet and listening to music before doing my homework, as well as I listen to music before going to comment this blog :P LOL I strongly believe that after finishing the class, all students are exhausted!! Or what about others?? This is just only my opinion. It’s my style and I think it’s not wrong.

Therefore, in my opinion, I think ascription is like the guideline for your life: how your life should be in the direct position, or destination. It cannot force you to that direction if you don’t want. In fact, it’s just worthless if we don’t follow it. Everything we behave, talk, and act out depend on our decision. So, I always respect others’ individual right, and I hope they would respect me too. But once, if one day I think and find that it’s wrong, I will be warning them. For my case, I can accept it, and then adjust or even adapt myself with that cultural rule, or we know it as “ascription” if I think it’s appropriate enough. =)

Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit." Jawaharlal Nehru
    - I think all the thing I just said is as same as this saying. Everyone individually has one’s own culture: individual belief, thought, idea, and even right. We should open our mind and spirit when each other has individual culture. In other words, it also means opening your wide vision after listening, and knowing each new culture from others. Imagination is more important than knowledge, but sometimes it should go along with each other. Once, you receive new knowledge. You can imagine. In my opinion, the way we think, act out, and behave is all about our cultural belief in real life. Therefore, we should accept and respect to the differences of each other.

WOW!! It’s nice to know that you also have the number belief, and ascription and avowal conflict. So, it’s common thing as we are human being. LOL

Ps. I think No.1 is great as well because it firstly comes before other numbers. =)
So, you are the one, right?? lol
In my opinion, Thailand is warm because of warm smile. So, I hope that it can reduce your homesick naka Ajarn. Of course, we all are friendly. ^__^

Anyway, Thanks for sharing the new cultural ideas for us.
I’m looking forward to learning from you more and more in class and here. Waiting for your great stories and experiences ka. :) Sounds interesting and excited!!

Have a nice week and Please Take care of yourself.

    Cold weather is coming!!
(Freezy for me >..< but I’m not sure about you LOL)

  104. Morning Aj Matthew,
I feel that the latest topic seems likely create for us as we are Thais. I believe that most Thais have grown up in system of ascription. On the other hand we also could be changing when we have experienced to new think or even new way to follow, and we think it is good to do that way. Although people around do not appreciate that, I believe that most of new generations would still stand firm to why we start to act different. It may be a hard time at the beginning but everything will be fine to us. And then either grand-parents or parents will accept in our avowals. It is because of we will not make troubles, in fact we only want to show others in the way we are.

  106. Good Morning! Aj. Matthew. ; )

I have heard about the 13th Friday story for a long time ago. I have seen some story about it from many movies since I was in primary school. At that time, I thought it was made up for just to make a movie because I did not know that there was a story about it.

Until I was about in high school, I was watching a movie that relate with number 13 which brought bad luck to the characters in the story. My father told me that the tale about the number 13 or 13th Friday was exist.
Since then, I have noticed that there are no 13th floor in any hotel in the western countries and western people think that number 13 brings bad luck to them.

    About the question:

I think both ascription and avowal are not a problem for me. I think I can adapt them and make them to go in the same way with my activities and behavior in everday life. I think to be myself is very important think. I feel comfortable to show who I am to other people. However, I think the culture and ascription that was written for us is also important. ; ))

However, the films Friday the 13th are very scare me.

For the question, i think to fallow an ascription is not a prolbem for me to be my avowel. Since i could remembered i was fallow an ascription for a long time and i can be my avowel at the same time.

  108. Good evening Aj. Matthew,

I have already known about Friday 13th before but I don’t know the really meaning. I just know that it is unlucky day. Therefore, I have to say thank you for your knowledge. It makes me know 12 is lucky number of western culture.

In Thai superstition, I always memorize number 9 is the best for everything whatever birthday, the beginning of new business, new building and also wedding. Thai believe number 9 means lucky and success.

    From your question,

I think ascription and avowal can go together because if we understand each other.

    avowal and ascription?

I think i usually follow ascription because i do not want to feel other. So, someone said that my life is quite boring.

Anyway I always appreciate if someone can be avowal in the right way. Because i can remember who s/he is.

P.S. Is it funny if Thais pronunce "avowal"?
I am not amgry or moody, i am just completely curious.

    From Question
I think ascription and avowal can go some way but we must know about that. You can use everything together, if you can apply that together.

  111. Hi! Matthew

When I heard about Friday 13th. It makes me thought about my favorite movie " Friday 13th". I was a biggest fun of this movie, but actually I ever had heard about belief of number 13 before. I know that it was an unlucky number of west people. Many people belief this number will bring evil to their life. Like you say it is the day that Jesus was crucified (killed). You might be wonder why I know this is a day that Jesus died. I know it from the last supper. I know you know what the last supper is. You know? Because of this number, it makes many countries from western have a high accident. The psychologists say that because of this day. It makes some people has an accident or sick. It makes many people afraid to travel or go out side. For me I think it just belief. I don’t believe about unlucky number will bring many Evil to my life. It just a day, I also was born in 13th day. And why I’m not unlucky? So it really is a normal day.

    For your question
I think it has affect with my avowal in something. Actually I think I don’t same like many Thai woman in society. I love to be single. I love be alone. Actually I don’t care that I will have a boyfriend or not. I think same like a west people that women and men are equal. Women can do anything like a man do, but in Thai society is not. When Thai people see some women that don’t have a boyfriend. They think “ Oh she is so different. Why she doesn’t has a boyfriend. May be she so Ugly. Exactly I do not understand why a woman that can stay by themselves or don’t have a boyfriend is wrong. So I think this ascription it really affects with my life.

  113. I have heard about this belief that 13 is an unlucky number for the western people. In Thailand, 13 is also one of the unlucky numbers. We believe that 13 stand for the word ghost. therefore; we have to come back home early in Friday 13th. The other unlucky number for Thai people is 6. It is because the pronunciation of this word (hok). Hok mean fall down. However, we also have a lucky number which is 9. We pronounce this word as Kaw. In Thai, the meaning of kaw is "keep going". These are the reasons that cause Thai belief.

    For your question...

I think that some ascription in Thai society make me feel uncomfortable. For example, Thai girls should not play marbles or should not play with boys. At that time, I had a lot of questions why why why and why? I just want to have fun with them but I can not. T_____T
