But when we "read" race, we can often "read" wrong. As the world becomes more connected, and people from different places and different faces mix together, live together, and have babies together, racial stereotypes become more and more meaningless.
Race has no meaning. We are human... this is all. There is no biological difference between the people of the world.
Stereotypes do have meaning. As we now know about stereotypes, they never represent the truth of everyone in a group.
Stereotypes based on race affect our communication, and it can often be positive or negative, harmless or harmful, passive or violent. We learn these stereotypes from our culture, and we read these scripts on the body. We learn our own race by what other people "read" when they see us. This is how race and culture are linked.
What do you "read" on other people? What do other people "read" on you? When you read racial features, does it affect your communication? Or... what have other people "read" on your body? Did their stereotypes affect their communication with you? Aj. M

ReplyDeleteHello, Aj, Matthew
ReplyDeleteAm I the first person?
^^
This case happens in daily-life of human in everywhere. Nobody can avoid. In each person has different attitudes to someone who may be stranger or not. Some people consider from feeling, some people consider from communication and some people consider from the first impressive.
It is difficult to describe that what and how we use to read other people. For me, I like to try to communicate with that person first, and I try to observe his/her acts or reacting.
Sometimes, I use my first impressive or feeling. It depends on situations. About the Racial feature, I don't know what and how other people read me but I can guess from their eye-contact, speech, act and so on. They will show when they look at me or speak to me. But in Thai culture, there are many ways to read other persons. For example, a man who is in B-Boy group, some person think he is sportman, very smart, good dressing and so on. They will try to greet and communicate with him. If they meet a man who wear dirty cloth, they will avoid to communicate because they think in the negative side to him. I think physical appearance is the main factor of Thai people.
Therefore, both stereotype or Racial feature absolutely effect to communicate with other people but I think it is not all. It depends on the individual attitude of each person too.

Hi, Aj.M
ReplyDeleteI think stereotype or racial affect communication.
Nobody wants to talk or communicate with one who is unbelievable; I mean appearance. People need good appearance to attract others to communicate with.
I am one who read other people from the first impression. I always judge them by the think that they express.
Last semester, I went to the front part of university. I saw a man (foreigner) who his face full of beard. I thought he is unbelievable, he is not a good person, and he looked like a mad man. So, I tried to avoid talking with him.
Do you know what mistake of my decision?
I knew from my friend that he is a teacher of Mae fah luang, School of liberal Art, and teaching ... subject(my section). So, I was very surprised.
This is the mistake that decide people from stereotype or racial.
I come from Esarn. Other people always think that Esarn people have flat nose and dark skin. However, my nose is not flat and my skin is not dark. Every time I told other people that I come from Esarn, They were surprised and unbelief me. (They told me, naa)
Anyway, miss you, naa...hahaha...take care.

For me, it is a normal thing. When I see someone, I usually read them from an appearance and behavior. If he/she seems unfriendly, I won't try to communicate with him/her. We usually judge people from seeing them.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I have known that my friends used to read me when they first met me. They said that I seemed friendly, polite, and quiet. I know I'm not that polite but it's a good judgement.

Hello Aj. Matthew,
ReplyDeleteFirst thing I have to say, great picture you have there!
So, does race effect my communication to other people? I think so. There was one time when I was playing soccer for my school in Wisconsin. There was a guy from the other team who look very Asian to me. During the game I heard his teammates called him "Song." As a result, I thought he was Thai. So, after the game while he was walking pass me I tried to talk to him in Thai. I said something in Thai that means "your team played well." A second later, he looked at me wondering and asked "What were you saying?" I said it again and he replied, "I'm sorry. I don't know what you were saying. I'm Korean by the way." I felt really embarrass so I gave my apology as fast as I could. That guy also said, "Don't be, I also did the same thing when I see someone that looked Korean."
This is another story.
I think reading people from what they "look" does effect the communication. It could be very offensive to some people. There was one time an old American man asked me "What part of China are you from?" I felt really offended and I said "I'm from Thailand. There is nothing to do with China." That poor old man felt really bad and said his sorry until I felt sorry for him.
From my point of view, reading others by looking at what they look is not a good thing. Surely, it does effect the communication.
So, this is one of my stories about race. So what do you think about it?
Nueng,

Hola Aj. Matthew
ReplyDeleteThank you for your advice and lesson in the class. I was really enjoy with it.
From this topic, I have an experience to share with you again. - -"
I went to America for being an exchange student for about a year. It was really great experience that I will never have again.
In that day, I walked in the hall way to go to the next class. On the way, in front of me, I saw many guys who are Mexican [might be]. They were talking but I did not concentrate with them, just continues to walk. Suddenly, one of them called me and tried to making fun with me. It that time, I was really upset but I had no time to talk or argue with them.
From this case, I can see that they are alike but I am not. They judged me by outside, the racial features. Also I judged them by using racial features; dark skin and black hair.
My racial features affected me a lot when I was there because many American thought that I am Mexicam because I have dark skin and black hair. It was a big problem because normally American kids are form to be a group. Then, I was not the same as them. I was the other.
In Lunch, I sat alone in the 1st semester. It was the worse experience that I had there. No one wanted to sat and talked with me because I wan not the same as other. How sad was it? T-T
In Thailand, I did like American kids when I saw foriegner students in MFU. I felt that they are not the same as us. So I do not have to talk with them. I am really bad person. lol
I really know how foreigner students feel to be other. Because I have felt in this way before.
So, do not judge people by their race. We are all friend. Talk to each other as much as we can to share our experiences as we did in the class. 555+
Thank you again for the great topic. I love to participate by this way a lot.
Have a good night.

Hi! Aj. Matthew
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think that everyone has ever read other body and everyone has ever been read your body as well. It is the truth of world. When we find new things or new people that are different from us, we will immediately decide that they are different from us. Therefore, we try to find that where they come from or who they are by reading their body from dressing or speaking. This situation can happen in every culture. For example, Thai people think that foreigners, who come to travel in Thailand, are the rich person, so some of tourist attraction, the foreigner must pay fees expensive more than Thais. This is the stereotype that Thais think about foreigners. On the other hand, some countries think about Thai people as well. For example, Swedish always think that Thais who move to stay there are prostitute. While I were living in Sweden, I always see the men look at me and try to say something but I hurry up to walk pass them. My aunt explained me and make me understand that some Swedish, who had ever come to Thailand, like to bring the bar girl come back to Sweden. This is stereotype of Thais in Sweden. The stereotype or reading the body can affect to communication because everyone doesn’t be the same way that you think. Sometime, people who come from the same culture or the same race may be differently. After the world is mixed together, the culture can mixed as well. Therefore, reading the body can not judge that your though is right or wrong. Race can’t compare good or bad person. It depends on each person.
We shouldn’t read only their body but we should read their mind. Sometime, the thing that you see may be differently with your though.
Have a sweet DREAM……….ZzZzZ
Hi, Aj.Matthew
ReplyDeleteI am Win, the lonely one in section 2.
It is acceptable because "I'm the other"
I think in morning class, we have the best activity to learn about race.
I always "read" on other people. I think it will affect to communication directly. When I see foreigner like you or anyone, I will "read" that "Could I talk with him/her?" "They are kind or not to talk with me?" because I'm lack in confident and shy to talk with other one, especially foreigner.
The other must "read" me as a nerd or something terrible but I do not care to talk with them. I think if they talk with me and know me well, they will know I'm different one.

Good evening Aj.Matthew
ReplyDeleteI belive that everybody has almost the same experiences.
For me,I "read" other people by reading from there feature. I mean "first impression"
for ex. if i see the western people, so I think that I have to communicate with them in English language. Moreover, If I meet people who are from other places that I don't know their language, so I think that I have to communicate with them by using body language.
I think that it is so easy to seperating people from feature.
In addition, I think that other people will read on me by reading from my feature or race.
For ex. I used to work with American people and my customers most of them were American people too. They always asked me that Are u from Vietnam, Thailand, China, or other places in Asia. It seems to be clear that they knew that I'm from Asia.
Actually, I think that nowaday our world is becoming a globalization. People from around the world can connect each other within a minute. Moreover, People have quite high educated, so they can speak English which is the international language. So we can commucate each other easily and there is no effect to the communication.

I hope that my score will not be deducted ^^
This is a great start. Those of you that have worked and lived abroad, Nueng, Meaw, Luck, Grace, I think you know about how race affects communication very well. Race has no meaning, like you discovered... it only has meaning because of what other people see and think.
ReplyDeleteThis is great.
Good afternoon kah!!!! Aj. Matthew
ReplyDeleteI think it is interesting topic for me.
I usually read on other people, and
I think it affect my communication in directly way.
I will read on other people from their appearance. Moreover, I will read from first impression as well. I have some experience to share with you.
Last week, I went to night plaza with my friends. Absolutely sure there were lots of foreigners. I saw one foreigner who was European (might be) he quite dirty because he wore cloth seem reggae style, and he had lots of beard. Therefore, I tried to avoid seeing and talking with him because he was not reliant. I think it can happen in every culture because everyone has different stereotype. It is not only Thai read on foreigners like this, but also foreigners read on Thai.
I have one friend, who is Singaporean, she tell me that every Thai students don’t have self-discipline,but I think not at all. Therefore, it affects my communication
with her.
Future more, I usually decide other people from racial features such as when I see black European I think they are other because they are different with Thai people, or when I see someone wear dirty clothes I think he is awful and he is other for me.
From this situation, I strongly agree that
different stereotypes affect to communication.
Have a nice day!!!!! Na kah

Good afternoon !!! Aj. Matthew
ReplyDeleteI read this topic already.
It is the story that I and my friends had already study in yesterday
For the first question, the first thing that I read on the other people is face and body. I think, that person is white skin, I think he/she is look good, clean and pretty.
It is the first impression for look someone first time.
For the other people read on me, someone maybe think negative and someone think positive.
I read racial features, it maybe does not affect for my communication. Sometime, I think that person is like this but in other way he/she maybe not look like that me think.
Therefore, it has some effect for communicate that I read someone wrong.
Have a nice day!!!

Good Morning;
ReplyDeleteThe difference of stereotypes and races affects to the communication.
The difference of races and stereotypes means the the difference of cultures. If people have the difference of cultures, they will also have the difference of communication and beliefs.
Even human has the same biology, but in detail human are not the same exactly.
5031006015 Section1
Hi Aj. Matthew...
ReplyDeleteYour posted picture is nice but I think you look better in you present look : P lolzz...
Anyway, this week's topic is very interesting. I always wonder why people like to separate the race. I agree with you that we all are same as "human". However, there is none of answer for me.
However, reading people is what we experienced every day. I have to be read by many people and I also read them too. As I’m different from people in my place, my experience might be similar with the experienced of my friend who used to live in other places.
I read people by watching them. First thing that I look on is there physical appearance. Then if I have to communicate with them, I’ll observe their personality, the way they speak, behave and more. Reading people is not always right. Therefore, we have the term “Stereotype”. Sometimes, when we read people from another culture, the communication system has to be changed. We have to communicate to them in different style.
As I mentioned that I’m different from people in my place. Not only the appearance, but also by the culture. I lived in Thailand but people here said that I’m not. I’m tall, my facial features are different. Most people who know me can communicate to me easily but for the people who don’t know me, they think that I’m from India because they observe from my facial features. Some said that I’m western people because I’m tall and my body features are likely to be westerner. The communication problem between me and the people is not too tough. People just look at me and surprised. Some even talk to me in English. It’s quite funny when I see Thais talk to me in English. But they can get along with me after they know me…

SECTION:3
I do agree with you that when we read about races, it’s hardly right. It happened to me once, but I was read by other. I was walking on the street in amusement park and a group of friends walked to me and asked me some question. I was a little bit nervous when they walked to me and talked to me with the language I could not understand. Good thing was one of them can speak English so he asked me if I am from Taiwan or not. Of course I said no. He laughed nervously and told his friends that I am not what they thought I was.
ReplyDeleteI read others too, but you know it is very difficult to tell. Even though I am Asian, many times I cannot tell the different between Thai, Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. We all look alike. I usually think they are Thai when I first see them, but I can't be sure 100%. So, what I usually do is try to listen to what language that they speak. I think it helps stopping me embarrassing myself lol
Racial features definitely affect the communication. When we read others and we stereotype them, we often wrong and maybe end up embarrassing ourselves. I used to think people who have dark skin have to be African American, I stereotyped them. Now, I realize that not every person who has dark skin is African American. Some are actually American. Just like what you mentioned above “the world becomes more connected, and people from different places and different faces mix together, live together, and have babies together, racial stereotypes become more and more meaningless.”
See you in class tomorrow ^^

Hello Ajan Matthew,
ReplyDeleteI always read people eyes first because eyes can show me how those people feel. Although, I don't know that person before, when I walk pass him/her, I can see from the eyes that the person is happy or unhappy. I always show my emotion through my eyes. When I feel happy, I sometimes do not smile with my mouth opened. I can just make an eye contact to show people that I am friendly. I sometimes read people movement also. Some people may put their hands somewhere when they feel shy. I love to read other people so that I can see the different kinds of their behavior. :D

^^ How are you today?
ReplyDeleteWell, personally, I always stereotype people who I don't know by their language, body and appearance which have good and bad stereotypes. I accept that stereotype could sometime affect my communication with other. For example, if I have a bad stereotype on someone, I usually have prejudgment that he/she might not be a good person and I would not like to talk with them. As the same as race feature, I always have bad reading on Burmese people who are in Thailand for being labor, for example. However, I accept that this is not a good habit; it’s true that "Manners maketh man."

ReplyDeleteI really liked to read everybody beside me. I know that it is looked impolite. However,I always gossip somebody after I finished to read them. Nevertheless, I always decided people from behavior including body movement more than talking. I am sure that we cannot decide people from verbel because they may lied to you easily. I still believed that if we want to know anybody deeply, we should to read by you eyes more than ears.

ReplyDeleteNowadays, society is open and has different
cultures and different people. I think stereotypes do not affect the communication with me because it depends on situation and propose of speaker. I usually read on other people by seeing their appearances: face, clothes, accessory, and so on. On the other hand, I do not know what other people read on me because it is up to person’s attitude; it may be the same with me. Moreover, it does not affect my communication to other when I read their racial features because I can talk to anybody who speaks polite to me and I will answer politely back.

I'd like to give some examples of how racial affects my communication. On my trip in India, I and my friend were waiting for the train at the train station. There were lots lots of people there.(as you can imagine!) We were standing among a large group of Indian, looking for space for us to sit and put our huge backpacks down. Then we found many backpackers European...Americans...and Yes!..there're 3 Asian ladies sitting not too far and one of them were looking at us. Of course, they were stangers but, surprisingly I felt so much releif like I just found my friends among the others! I didn't do anything, but that girl suddenly told other girls to move, to make more space for us. It's like they could read our mind!(or our faces :p) I thought they are Japanese, but after I talk to them I knew that they met here only a few hours ago. The girl that saw us first ,is Chinese and the other two are Japanese.
ReplyDeleteI've heard a lot about terrible history between these two countries, but here, they have no problem at all.We kept talking and talking, sharing our experiences about our trip. It's really like what I've said, we felt comfortable like we were talking to our friends and I think they probably felt the same.(because they already grouped before we met them!)
Different racial doesn't really affect my communication but I'll feel more comfortable to communicate with people who has same or similar racial features as mine. For example,in tourists line,I decided to ask question from a Chinese guy(I knew he's Chinese from the book he was reading) rather than Japanese guys..maybe it's because I'm half Chinese, so I am familiar with Chinese people, I guess. Well,I really never think about that until you ask these questions. I'm so surprised that it's sound like I'm judging people because of their races. I shouldn't do that but it's automatic... sorry
4931006184
This is not about the question but i think you look a little bit fat in this picture. eieiei ^^"
ReplyDeleteFor me my self, I usually read people from their appearance such as their clothing style, hair style, and also their gesture. I think that appearance or body can tell many things about that person. Sometime, I like to sit and watch people around me and sometime I try to guess about that person’s personality. I realize that people usually see other people on their appearance or body first before trying to know them.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, racial feature and stereotype might affect the communication. For example, many people usually look down upon hill tribe people and may stereotype them in negative thing, so when they have a conversation with hill tribe people, their voice or facial expression will show that they look down and don’t really want to communicate with hill tribe people.
I also have my own example about what do people read on me. I am a Chinese but I was born in Thai so my appearance look like Chinese people. I remember that when I was a first year student in MFLU, many people including teachers always think that I am a foreign student so they usually speak English with me. Moreover, some of my friends think that I am a foreign student so they don’t know how to talk with me. But finally, after they realize that I am Thai and I can speak Thai, they feel surprise and begin to talk with me. Therefore, I think that our body or some feature is quite important for communication and this is what I have learned from myself.

Good Evening
ReplyDeleteI always read people who I don’t know or first meet from their appearance. Many times, when I first meet a person, I will go judging them without truly knowing them. But I don’t only have negative thoughts on people I don’t know, just try to figure out what they’re thinking. I remember the first time I entered into the university where new students came from different places. It’s of course that when I first met those new comers, I just anticipated that some students would’ve been so difficult to talk to/to make friends with because their outside features told me the way they aren’t, so I just stereotyped them by what they have or how they appear.
This is a problem for me to communicate well with those people who I stereotyped, particularly if stereotyping in negative ways because my bad thoughts about them made me react to them in such ways I shouldn’t have done. And I could only be sorry to them for how I othered them after getting to know them deeply.
Have a good time

Hello, Aj. M
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I love this blog entry because I love to make people misunderstand me through my stereotypes :-)
Most of my friends told me that before they knew me in personal they always think that I am arrogant and unfriendly because I rarely smile to ones I don't know, not even pay attention to them. But once they know me, they just say "you are completely opposite to what I think you are!"
And because of my style of dressing and some of my accesseries -- I have five earrings on my right ear and one on the left one, people think I am not a nice girl (for Thais).
Many (Thai) people stare at me with an despise look, then they asked my parents, wonders to know other person's business such as "Where is your daughter study?" or "Did she got a good grade?" But when they know the truth, all they could do is keep their mouths shut, and I just satisfied :-D
I love it when people lost their face after try to "read" me through my appearance.

ReplyDeleteI think that racial can affect my communication and how to get along with others.
In my experiences, I always give the meaning to others from physical appearance.
I think that I will make friends to others it become form look like of them because if they are look clean and smiling to me it’s a good time. In contrast, if they are look awful like with beard it can make me feel uncomfortable to make friends with.
The people also read about me that I’m quite less speak if I don’t know each others but, if others know me very well that they will think that I’m a talkative girl.

For me I have no chance to go abroad so, I cannot see others make stereotype to me.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I always think that foreigner who comes to my country is a rich man that wants to visit or spends his/her time on vacation or has a high education. In fact, it may not be like that...I mean s/he may seek for a job to make money or may settle his/her family in Thailand.
Moreover, I also have a negative stereotype in my head too....
I sometime think that foreigner may look me down from my hair color, my status or other thing of mine...
I don't know my thinking like this can be called stereotype or not, but I think it is true...
We are different, even if, we are the same race. We can live together on the world by peace, understanding, and adapting ourselve.
However, when I have a communication with others, I have never had a problem or something bad because if I don't want to speak I will not. I think that I shouldn't speak it out in that time...
I think that I should understand them before make a stereotype as I used to do.
Finally, I believe that race or difference is meaningless that is not a big deal when we live in the real world with others who understand the world.

Good night Aj.Matthew
ReplyDeleteFirstly, in the picture you looklike young guy ^^
For the question
Firstly, I read other people from their appearances such as eyes contact, smilling, action, dressing, speech, etc.
Secondly, I think, it is the appearances too because it is the first thing that can show yourself.
Lastly, the racial features affect my communication a little bit. I do not like dark skin people because it comes from my stereotypes. I am taught the dark skin people is the violent peoplebecause of the big body and bad smell. So after that,I fear the dark skin people. However, if I am necessary to communicate with dark skin people, I can do it. But I can choose, I will not do surely.
On the other hand, mostly people looks other people through appearance or body. They think following their stereotypes. I think,
their stereotypes don't affect their communication with me because I do not strict in this story. But for someone, if he/she does not like some group, he/she cannot accept or communicate with them.
For me, although,I don't like dark skin people, it does not mean I can be friends with them. It is only appearance, I do not know about their mind and their opinion. THerefore I will not decide the people from their appearances.
SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN SEE, IT MAYBE NOT TO TRUE.

I have a frined. He is half Thai and Denish. When I first met him, I thought " this guy seem very smart in English".
Everybody in the class expected him to be the leader of English class because he looked like a foreigner the most. Therefore, we thought that he might be the smartest guy in English.
At first, nobody want to talk to him, but when he spoke, his accent was competely Thai.
He was so quite and have less frined, but when the time passed by, we are the close friends.
We realized that he is Thai. He spoke Thai language. He have never go aboad. He's just half Denish in his blood that make his physical appearance dissimilar to us.
I think it's not fair to judge everyone from their look because we can lose something that we didn't discover it.

However, we thought wrong that he is the smartest English guy in the class . !! He is just a normal Thai.

Hello! Aj. M
ReplyDeleteOh! For this topic is very interesting. I have never had direct experience with it. In fact, Race affect to my communication. If I see someone similar to me, I will have brave to talk with them. For example, if I see someone who looks friendly, I want to keep contact with them. But if someone looks fierce and not smiling, I will not talk with them. I usually read physical appearance of them such as styles, hair and clothes.
Another example, when I see someone who wears a big shirt, loose trousers, a big gold or silver necklace and a big sneaker, I think they are hip hop and love hip hop music. Although, we usually read other people from appearance in the first time, we must try to communicate with them. It makes us understanding them more.
Have a good weekend ^^

These comments are very insightful... and very honest. We all have stereotypes about race, and even though I have studied and thought about this issue a lot, I am still controlled by my stereotypes sometimes. We must work hard to keep our judgments back, so that we can be open to communicate with anyone regardless of their appearance.
ReplyDeleteI just had a conversation with another western teacher. She just finished a class with her freshy students, and one student made a joke at another student: "Dark Skin!" And all of the students laughed. This teacher was very upset, and got angry with the students. She is American, and this would be a terrible insult in her culture.
Is it an insult in Thailand? Why did the students laugh? How would that dark-skinned student feel about this joke? I have wondered about this because I have also had this experience before, and it was shocking for me too.
Good afternoon Aj. Matthew
ReplyDeleteI believe that the first thing that most people will do when they see a person is to look at his/her physical appearances such as face, skin, body, etc. If he/she is good-looking, white skin, beautiful face, we would like to know who she/he is and would like to talk to him/her if we can. May be we will guess where he/ she come from; for example, when I see a woman who is beautiful, quite small body, has white skin, we will assume that she is Northern woman. If we see a woman who has dark skin and quite big body, we will assume that she comes from the Southern.
Yes, me too. When I see someone, I always look him/ her and think where he/she comes from. It is like a game about guessing something; may be the answer is right and may be wrong. I think it is fun.
In the same way, I think when other people look at me; they also read me from my physical appearance. Most people can guess correctly that I come from Southern Thailand because my skin quite dark, my eyes is big, and my body is quite big.
For me, I think reading racial features does not much affect my communication if I am the reader because I can talk and make relationship with everyone no matter who he/she is, where he/she come from, or he/she is good-looking or not. On the other hand, if other people read me, I notice that my racial features affect my communication. When they look at me, they often think I am aggressive and not friendly because of my appearance, but when they talk to me and know about me more, they said that my characters are opposite my appearance. ^^
However, I think we should not judge people from their physical appearance because it does not need that the person who is good-looking, smart, beautiful, or handsome, will be good person or perfect. Everything we see might not be same as we think, right?
Thank you ^^
Have a nice day na ka :)

Hi. Aj.Matt
ReplyDeleteI also look the person whom i never know by their appearance. It is only one way for me to look at them but if i have a chance to communicate with them maybe i change my opinion about them. Sometimes only the appearance tell me about them. By the way, the picture that i see, it is not true. However, the appearance is the first thing when we focus on them.
Racial feature is affect to me to communicate because I have a friend who look like chinese. For the first time that i met her, i don't know that she can speak Thai. So, that is my little miscommunication.
5031006133 sec:03
First time I meet people, surely, I will read them from their appearance such as their physical or the way their dress. I think all people may read like me. On the other hand I think another people when they see me at the first time they also will look to my appearance.
ReplyDeletereading other from their appearance, surely, that it must affect to our communication.
For example, first time I came to MFU, I met some student she dress very sexy and also have a make up on her face. I think that, she may not be a good student at all. But when we see each for along time we become a friend. and she
was not as I think in the beginning. From this example, read other people by their appearance can be affect to our communication. However, I think appearance can't tell any body personally. therefore, we can read other from their appearance but we can't judge other from our reading.

Good evening ka Ajarn,
ReplyDeleteFirstly, your pic is really nice!! Cool! :D
This topic is interesting again.
I see some sign in your pic that related to this topic - Racism as well.
Of course, its sign indicated race obviously that foreigner should be in this way. I understand more right now about your class activity on Thursday.
We're in different group because of others. They see and separate us because of our differences. You use color as a symbol tool for our separation. I think it's like our color skin and mark on that sticker is like something that abnormal, so we divided into group. Like Asian, western, or even other things. But once, we can find group, we feel happy. If not, we feel strange of being others in group. I can imagine right now that what a pity if we can't find our group!
Anyway, I think that everybody has one's own stereotypes towards others. I also have stereotype as well. I receive this belief from culture. It teach us to think like this. The way to think that what thing is good or bad, or whatever. It is as same as the way to look to others.
You're right that because of race, it can affect communication. The best you look, the best communication could be happened. It's like the magnet to persuade others to know you if your appearance is good. It's like my friend said earlier about "first impression".
However, stereotype make us have the wrong attitude because we can't judge that person from their look only. It depends on other factors as well that they are good or not. It's like this saying "Don't judge the book only its cover!". Just open it first, you will see the core. How valuable and meaning it is! Like open you mind, you'll see the real one of that person.
For the questions, I have the same thought as others here. I confess that I first read others from appearance. But, it is my cultural belief since I was a young girl. First impression is important because it is like the powerful magnet to persuade other to be with you. But, right now I have changed my attitude because appearance can't guarantee that person: how h/she is good or not. It depends on their mind. Once, I got to know that person, those wrong belief is fade way. So, I will open the paper inside book before I buy it. By the way, it could be wonderful if that person have both good appearance and beautiful soul. How lovely it is! LOL
For another person reading on me, I'm not sure about their attitude towards me because human mind is hard to understand. Different person, different attitude. Anyway, I could say that I know myself: "I'm a good girl, I am." haha ;) :P
Well, clear example is that others know I'm Chinese because of my feature. Sometimes, they will use Chinese to speak with me. =) That's why it affects communication.
However, it's not important as you said that race has no meaning because of globalization that everything is not original one. Everything has mixed with others. So, we all are the same. Or I could say that everything we see or surface feature is not stable, but the real permanent one is our soul or our mind.
Therefore, I love to say this again, I prefer to love our "Global Family". Thank you. :)
Have a wonderful time of your life ka Ajarn. Long life journey!
Take care of yourself.
See you naka. ^__^
Ps.. Wish you a Merry X'mas and Happy New Year ka. Let's celebrate!

Aj Matthew;
ReplyDeleteToday, In our class, we learned the lesson about racism. The concept of "WE ALL ARE SAME AS HUMAN BEING." It's very true.
I just found a clip which I think that it is related with the concept.
I want to share it to all
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdeioVndUhs&feature=featured
whether we are white or black, we are still be a HUMAN !!!
Ajarn Mattew ka,
ReplyDeleteFrom your other questions, I think it also insults in Thailand ka because as you know that Thai stereotype; white skin is good. So, if someone is joke about dark skin, I think this person will be upset with that joke. I can imagine with that feeling. T__T So, they won't hesitate to put whitening cream. In order to be beautiful, we are put wrong attitude to our memory/mind like your example here.
I think it is sometimes ironic because Thai wants white skin but Western wants tan skin. Skin care is produced in different kinds as you see in the market. Tan cream in West and whitening cream in Asia.
Wow, also Thx for video above ka. I love it. It gives us a clear picz. It's like my opinion that we all are the same as human being. =)
Sharing is Great!!
I can say that I always read other people by racial feature. I have an experience about this.
ReplyDeleteFirst time I saw Aj.Supin, I thought that she is not Thai. Because of she has a big eyes and white skin; she looks like Korean or Japanese. (She is very cute ^^) In addition, I met her first time in the Literature1 course and I never seen her before. In the first class, Aj.Supin came to class and spoke English only. I thought she cannot speak Thai but after class she spoke Thai language. So, I felt surprised.
Moreover, yesterday my friend told me that there was some teacher very cute and looked younger. Today I see him, first time I think immediately in my mind he is Thai but my fried tells me he is half-caste. (I can’t remember which race)
After that I think we shouldn’t decide other people from outside, we should know them first before decide them.
I don’t know why when we see a person who has dark skin, why we try to avoid them but me too. I try to avoid and don’t communicate with them. I agree with you, I think sometime we are controlled by our stereotypes.

Hi Aj.Matthew
ReplyDeleteI really agree with you that "RACE" is meaningless because we are stayed and live in this world together. Some say that racism is use to think about what we are, but actually it is not our stereotype at all. it is only our race that detemine what we are appear or what we are different from other.
Like me! I am a Sountherner, many freinds said about my appearance that I have dark skin(my foreigner friend very like my skin, she said it is very beautiful skin. Many people asked that Are you southerner right? YES I am but why you know that? They said " You look like that!" Why they know that?? However, I am still Thai people. So, it is not my trouble to communicate with other but I am more comfortable to talk with southerner friends with our dialect. I love what I am and I like what we are.

ReplyDeleteToday I learned about racism in class. In generally, I think our societies have common problems about racism for other culture certainly. In contrast, I have not problem about this but I don’t know that they will racism about me or not. Last year, I have an experience that I saw many foreigners come to my aunt’s house. The first time I meet them. I felt frightened with them in short period. They came from African . They have a black-skin and curry-hair. I don’t know what they thought about me because I am black hair and shorter than them. However, we can talk together because any activities are the ways for relationship with other. In my opinion, our appearance is affect to conversation. We will be more careful for communication because we are fear to approach when we talk together. I have not problem about communicate with other. I can adapt to talk with other. But I talk with them when I want to talk and not sometimes.

Hello! Aj. Matthew
ReplyDeleteFor your question, when I meet people at the first time, I actually read them from physical appearance. I believe everyone think like me because the appearance is the first thing to show yourself on everyone eyesight. At any rate, it depends on people attitudes also. At the same time other people also read on me by appearance such as someone told me I am arrogant. I just speak less and not smile with a stranger but the real tale I am talkative and funny.
Surely, it is a stereotype among community or our communication that based on affect of race. In my experience, I have heard from some foreigners think both negative and positive in Thai people. Someone always look down Thai people that Thais are dirty, old-fashioned and poor because it might be happened from their first sight while some foreigners think Thais are nice and kind. Meanwhile, some Thais people are afraid to foreigners and always think they’re leaders. My aunt ever told me she is afraid to foreigners because they are tall and have a big body but for me, I am afraid to Black American people because they have a black skin and look crucial. Moreover, when I saw people who wear ragged dress or something like this I will think they are dirty and do not take a shower, HAHAHA. In MFLU University as well, if I saw a girl who has impolite or sexy dress and make up too much on her face I think she may not be a good girl. I accept that I always look people from the physical appearance before to study in habit. It is much in evidence that physical appearance and racial features is important and affect my communication.
Oh! It’s so late night.
Anyway, take care of yourself na kha. :)

Hello, Aj.M
ReplyDeleteAbsutely, I read other people on their bodies. Usually, when I met someone at the first time, I always look at their physical appearances and I judge what kind of person they should be.
I have ever walked pass a stranger on the street. He has dark skin and his face look like the prisoner. At first sight, I'm so scared and keep walking away from him. My eyes still stared at him even he walked pass. I'm worried that he maybe a dangerous person and unbelievable.
From this case, reading others from the body, we maybe scared and avoid to communicate with them because we already judged other from outside.
And it is a normal thing that other maybe Stereotypes me based on my bilogical appearance.

Hi, Aj. M
ReplyDeleteI think many people actually read on other people's bodies. I do so. I don't know why most people judge the others by their appearance when they first meet. When I meet with people from the South, I always think that they are unlike me. Their skin is darker, they have bigger eyes, they are might be terrorists, whatever. They are also scary because their physical appearances.
After I studied 'Race' in class, I've learned that 'Race has no meaning, but culture teaches and sterotype us'. The activity that you provided in class teaches me the meaning of race, eventhough I am out-group.
Thank (-..-)* Have a nice weekend...& holiday Aj. M!!
MIC 5031006129
I really agree with I-Toei because I didn’t smile to everyone who is the stranger for me so other people usually judge me that I’m an arrogant girl!!
ReplyDeleteIf they befriend with me, they will not judge me like that and they will change their attitude toward me because I’m a good-humored and can talk with everyone.
Anyway, we shouldn’t judge other by their appearances but we should befriend and study what they are after you are friend with them. I used to judge other by focus on their appearances like good looking, make up, and so on. I often think that they are good person because of their appearances. Later, I found that my idea was wrong because I judge them by my feeling and stereotype but they aren’t like that.
Body can’t tell us what they are but we should read and learn what they are.
Have a nice weekend ^^

Hi, Aj. Matthew
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think other people read the characteristic of me when they want to communicate. First, I think when we want to communicate with someone, we should learn or predict about their character.
For me,I will read it from other people. I will read other people who are racial feature by observe their behavior and what they expressed. Sometimes, it might be affect to a communication between me and them.

I am a person who judge the other from their stereotypes but I have never shown my feeling and view to them and just only keep it in my mind. I always read other perple on their bodies. Their physical appearances have affected to my communication such as when I met with burmese, I felt suspicious and displeasure but I can control myself and my emotion.Or when I met with cambodian , I was very scare them because I knew that Cambodia is the land of black magic and communism. However, I don't know what do other people read on me and my body? because I don't read their thought.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, stereotypes based on race and racial features affect my communication same as the other use them to read on me.

ReplyDeleteFrom your question, I always "read" other people when I met them from outside. In Thailand, I always found the a person who come from Northeastern because I come from there. On abroad, I always seeing who is Asia or who from Thailand as well. When I knew where are they from, I ready to know that what is their race, and stereotype. I don't know why am I like to read other people because we don't know for each other. But I cannot stop my thinking for read other too. From your question, I never judge the people from my eyes or read in there body. Because of I think there appearance are differentthere body and different race and so on. Do you think so aj.M?

Good evening Aj. M.
ReplyDeleteI have talked with a student who comes from Myanmar. At that time, I did not know where dose she from. I talked with her but she told me that I do not know what you are talking about. I looked at her face; she smiled and said to me “I am Burmese”.
On the other hand, I also have many experiences about my racial feature when I communicate with other people. There are many father’s friends came to visit our family. When my father introduced me to them, they told that your daughter look like “farang” very much. It is not only this. When I went to somewhere, some people asked me “Are you half-caste”. Sometime, I told them “Yes, I am half-caste of Thai and northeast”. Some of my friends in the university do not believe that I come from Udonthani. Then I used dialect; they laughed to me and also believed me at that time. It is so fun. Some people said that I look like the people in the south because I have big eyes. I think it is not affect to me more. I am Thai. Moreover, I think I am me because of other. I really agree with this that you told me.
It also affect when we communicate with other people who have a different race. Sometime, I think it is important to know before communicate who is he/she.
Have a nice day.

I really agreed with u in class that while I was going abroad such as in USA, I tried to find Asian people.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, they were not Thai people, but I felt very happy to meet them.
Moreover, if i met Asian people, i tried to hear his voice that what language did they speak.
Most of them are Asian-American, but some of them are Asian and sometimes Asian people asked me before I asked them.
So, i think that either Asian or Western tried to find the same race as them, while they were not home or went abroad.
Luckily, I found many Thai people in America, we were all happy eventhough we met just a minute.
Hello, Aj. Matthew
ReplyDeleteFor me, I think it’s ordinary for people to read others from their physical appearance, because when you have to meet your new friend, you have to read them first.
I think appearance is the first thing to show who you are, or what you look like. Unexpectedly, I think it could be racism sometime when you prejudge others in negative way, and it’s totally unfair for them because they didn’t bad as they look like, and this will effect to their or our communication.
However, I think people couldn't stop to read or prejudge people from their face including me, because I think it’s our basic instinct.

Hi aj. M… :)
ReplyDeleteI am thinking about a situation I have experienced concerning with your questions that races and stereotypes affect my communication.
Well…when friends and I went jogging and walking around the campus in the evening, we usually walked from stadium to resident house, then ran and ran for three minutes and walked for five minutes to the president’s office ha. But I did not know why we had to run very quickly when we was passing the constructing area. And I did not know why I was so scare Burmese people working there. It was no point to scare them, but it happened.
Quite strange!
I was afraid them even I have not talked to them. (I was a negative person right?)
I avoid having a conversation with them because I only know that they have dissimilarity from me in terms of physical appearances; clothings and eyes, but I do not know their insight how nice they are. Sometimes, it’s unfair to judge them from these kinds of things.
I have learnt from last class that they are people like us, have all things like us and no point to scare them, and it is meaningless like you have mentioned.
I think, if Burmese people know that I am thinking about them in these ways, they will sad and maybe mad at me. Maybe they do not want to talk to me when they read my body, too because I am a stranger for them. Ha!
Now I know that, communication is very necessary for me, I cannot avoid communicating because I cannot find another ways to deal with people except communicating.
Thank you for this thoughtful topic. I have learnt and opened-minded wider about people around me. I am sure that I will not scare Burmese people when I go jogging around the campus again. ^-^
Good night.

Hi, Ajarn.
ReplyDeleteLast class is very surprising activity. It was a kind of reading the body. Everybody contacted without talking, just use body movement. It is very uncomfortable. I think that if people do not speak at all and communicate with the reading body, this is very difficult to understand. Reading the body sometimes works and sometimes does not work. However, most Asian people usually do not like to talk too much. In family, parents and children can understand each other by showing an example to do things. It is not necessary to talk a lot like western people.
In other words, I think that reading the body is to make people just understand the surface of people, not in dept. talking or speaking is to understand the ideas of each other. Finally, I think that we should learn people in order to understand them both speaking and reading the body. It is the best way to avoid misunderstanding people.

I think racial feature affect my communication. When I want to say with someone I will read that person from their appearance and behavior first. After that I will think what appropriate word is that I should say to her or him. But If I read that person wrong, my communication is exactly effect to the person that I said with such as I see a woman make up and get dress more, I think she is not a good woman. She must to use rude word when she says so when I say with her I will show some unfriendly words to her.
ReplyDeleteThe first time that people meet me, they also read me like I read them too. They think I am polite and bashful because I do not get dress and make up more. When they say with me they will use polite word and they look like friendly. Someone think I am intelligent because I wear eyeglasses thus if they have a question, they will ask me, but I cannot answer them.

What do you "read" on other people? What do other people "read" on you?
ReplyDeleteWhen you read racial features, does it affect your communication? Or...
what have other people "read" on your body?
Did their stereotypes affect their communication with you?
ahh..good afternoon aj.M...i'm a little bit late again ^---^ anyway, i'm here to share with u in this blog.
so, about the question this week...I agree with you...we are always looking for the one who looks like us.
"it's a tacit"....and it's effects to us a lot to communicate with other who looks different from us also.
In our life we might found the different situation with the racism thing but how can we deal with that situation?
It's difficult don't u think? because when we found that everyone around us look at our self and try to judge and read us.
So,we may feels uncomfortable anymore.
I think everyone read other like a tacit and judge other with their appearence first.
Such as when we meet other people who has a different skin color with us we may feels uncomfotable
to talk with them.
However, I think we always has our own way, no matter what or when or why we are all human.
We can be what we want to be and other people too.
They can be what thay want, I think it's unfair if we don't like anyone to judge us at the first site they met
So, I think we have to do the same...Do not jugde other at the first site but learn more about them.
Then we may found that they do not like the same we think at the first time at all. ^----^

Dear, Aj. Matthew
ReplyDeleteDiferent people, different thinking
There are too much people in our society.
In my opinion, therefore, I think racial feature is the instrument to help and affect to my communication, but it is not totally. Normally, the outer people's appearance is the easiest way for people to read and make me use appropriate word to talk with other people.
For example, when I see older persons, I use very polite word with them. On the other hand, when I talk with my younger brothers, I can use impolite words to them.
Sometimes, racial cannot jugde people's habit or manner. people use only some racial help them decide to speak with other people.

Hello, Aj. Matthew
ReplyDeleteRace has no meaning but culture gives it a meaning to judge another people.
I do not know that how people read on my body.
However, race does not affect my communication as well.
WE ARE ALL THE SAME.
I think that we can compare human with the book.
It means that we can not read only a cover of that book.
We must learn to understand how well or terrible it is when we open and read the detail inside.
It is quite true that we always choose a book to read by seeing a beautiful cover. Sadly, the detail inside is not remarkable at all.
By the way, many time people choose the uninteresting cover, the book also makes the reader disappointed.
Ha-ha…that is life; life is a book and that’s why we cannot read only one page.
Therefore I “read” on other people by their opinion, thought, and ideas not their racial features.

ReplyDeleteI am quite sure that every person in the world has ever read or judged other by stereotype, except God and Buddha*-*. Moreover, if person who ever read or judged other by out standing features, the communication will be happened automatically. For example, my experience, I usually read other by his or her speech, thinking and out standing features: dress, hair style, skin, height and weight. Some person I have the positive in the first time I met but some is not because of my stereotypes. For the person that I have the positive thinking in first time, I usually talk with his or her. For the person that I have the negative thinking, I do not want to talk with the even though he/she has never done the bad thing for me. From the above opinion, it does convince that the judge by stereotype makes the problems for communication. However, not only me that judge other by my stereotype, I assure that other have ever done it. When I notice the others who judge me by his or her positive stereotype by reading his or her behavior or non verbal, I will give the good feed back for him or her. On the other hand, if they judge me by negative stereotype, I will wonder that have I ever done the bad thing for his or her and I need to know his or her answer.
This story teaches me that I should not judge other by the appearance but it is very difficult to do.

ReplyDeleteAt first sight, when you saw someone, you always read to predict that person how are they. Extremely, you always decide them from the physical appearance; dress, hair style, shoes or other accessory. I want you to know you cannot decide whomever from outside only. For example, in my case, the outside other people try to read me how am I; they always decide I am arrogance and fashionable. Surely, I accept I am fashionable; I like fashion, but how do you know I am arrogance; I don’t accept. Because you don’t know me; how am I, so you shouldn’t decide me like that? Until now, I’m not quite seriously about that because person who close to me, they will know and understand how am I, so I think just enough; it is better know more people, but cannot find a person who is genuine to you.
Shouldn’t decide person from the outside, on the other hand, it’s better if you decide form the thing that they are.

ReplyDeleteHi, Matthew
ReplyDeleteFirst, I have to say; I like your picture.
I think for me, the different of race is not effect to my communication with other people. In my thought, every body has their own culture and stereotypes. So, just they have a different of race or culture, it doesn't makes me dislike them or don't want to talk with them. Actually, I am a person who dislike to read people. Ok, may be they are different, and so what. I think it doesn't make sense, if you look at people at the first time. And then you think that they are a people like you or they are different from you, and makes you don't want to communicate with them. Oh come on. It doesn't makes sense. For me, like I say I don't like to read the other people at the first time, but people always read me. When they see me, they usually think I will be like their thought. Arrogant, Bad person or horrible 555+ . All of I can do just don't care about what people think. I can not stop their mind. So, never mind. And Yes, all I want to say to another people that don't always read people from your first impression, because of like you say Matthew. We are Human.

When we are different culture, religious, body, and the most important is country from them, absolutely, we will be other of them. I always pity the one who lives in undeveloping country. As the same way, the foreigners who live in developed countries, they must think to us like that. They must feel pity or even look down us. It is due to the first time that I met somebody I cannot notice who they are beside the body ,physical appearance and race .When I read them I will know which way is the suitable way for me to talk with them. I know this way is not a good way for me to judge someone just only what we see because the thing that we see whether race, physical appearance and status do not have meaning in itself. The thing that is important and I should know is we are all human.

Many people like to give definition to another people by their look. After that the people will cognize another person acting. Then the people will observe other person speaking; what they are thinking, expressing emotion, etc.
Appearance is as a door for another people to come to you. If you are good looking, good dressing, people will come to see you. However, there is many conditions for people to haveing relationship with you. If you are handsome but you have bad behavior, people will run away from you in the end.

For this topic, I quit agree that everyone try to read others to understand them. To understand what they are through appearence, habit, life style, love, detestation, and so on. And it seems that people who are similarity were arranged in the same group. Of course, it might be difficult to find the exact answer about WHY? or WHY NOT?.
ReplyDeleteHowever, to share my idea I think everyone belifes they are right in deeply. And often judge ones who different are wrong or strange. This process sounds like the ATOMATIC JUDGEMENT****. Therefore, this is not unusual because the event like this has found in every places.
Lastly, I hope the target of this READ* is to undertand others in the way of participating not for separating, and for us.
