This week and next week, we are exploring the idea of internationalization and what that means for cross cultural communication in a post-colonial and globalized world. We are connected internationally everywhere we go and with everything we do. Every time we use our mobile phones, turn on the TV, surf the internet, and check our e-mail, we are participating in globalization. Our interconnectivity has brought many new things into our lives, and in fact made us dependent on each other more than ever in history... but what is the effect to culture?
I'm sure our world today is more and more unrecognizable to our grandparents and certainly the generation before them. Culture is accelerating. Culture is changing. Culture is internationalizing.
So, what does that mean? I would like to know your thoughts and ideas about what it means to be internationalized. What are the qualities and characteristics of an international person, or more popularly: a world citizen?
I don't know. Aj. M

Hi Aj. Matthew and CCC friends,
ReplyDeleteFor internationalized, at first, I think most country in the world are colonized by the influence of the language, English. However, most people may think that English is very important for countries that English is not a mother-tongue, but if we notice, we will see that actually the English speaking people are depend on us. They have to do business or other purposes with us. That's why they have to provide English everywhere they go and we use English with them to communicate or trade back. So, it means that we are all connected and depend on each other. We have English, communicatoin equipments and transportation stuff to be the mediums for people around the world to communicate to each other. These make us have friends even we stay home, learn other cultures through internet or by the traveling.
A person who can be an international person should be able to understand other cultures. In fact, he/she may not have to understand other cultures, but should be able to get along with other cultures and become part of any cultures. But from the globalization internationalize us, so I think we all now are international.
These are what I think about in international. May you guys find it interesting.
Best,
thanks for your comment paechan.... maybe it is just you and me this week.
ReplyDeleteI used to feel quite stressed about participating in some kind of neocolonial tradition of teaching English abroad. Maybe I still wonder about this.
But now that I have stayed in Thailand for a while, and have met many friends, and learned a lot about the culture here, I can recognize that Thai people and culture use the new knowledge in a new way that works for the culture.
There is a lot of debate about this subject. I wonder if students think about this subject at all, since they are the ones most affected. I would love to know more ideas and opinions.
Hi Aj.M
ReplyDeleteIs it just in time for my comment and idea?
I think internationlization is added by technology and language. We are using English to communicate wherever we go and we use technology to connect and use it as materials to help our life easier. All of us are changing to be the one
The international person is not only the person who can speak Englsih fluency in my idea. No one knows what is the real international person are and me too. In globalization, everyone can be the international person when they comunicatet to the others related to thier purpose, they may speak English,Chinese ot Japanese and they become the one who are an international person in my idea. We cannot judge that the international person is only the person who can speak English even though this language become an international language. In my idea, the international person should be a person who can understand the other culture and get along well with it no matter what they are. The globalization made us close, which means that we close to the others culture too. Everyone can be the international person when they are open thier mind.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the internationalize come to every country by the colonization. I can see easily in neighbor countries. I think Colonization has both of avantages and disadvantages. We are quite lucky that we are free and independent, but we have to learn English more than people who are in our neighbor countries. I don't mean every one, but someone who are good at English, because they have lived with it since they were young. Anyway,I'm so pround that Thailand is Thailand in nowadays.
ReplyDeleteThe international means likw a globalization, we have lingual franca to use to communicate with other people in every country; it is English. Thus, English ia an international for my opinion, and also i think that people who can use English well and has more knowedge about foerign countries well, they are international person.

Good evening, Aj.M
ReplyDeleteToday, I study about cultural identities, many words, and definitions of them. It is so hard to remember them and quiz in next class.
Everything has two sides. I think the new ways to communicate with other can affect to culture. Because we usually find the new things, new communicates for using instead. Of course, we will get the better communication but we forget to think of the world and the culture that will be change and how the new generation study the old culture?
